Campus card machine finally up and running again

The campus card machine should now be up and running after a string of bad luck in the last few months. The staff at the ID Centre in the Young Sports Centre were taking photos at

_the first of the year, but were unable

to print the cards as they had not come in yet.

There was a backlog of about 1,000 photos ready to be printed by the time the cards arrived. When the staff tried to print all the backlogged cards, the printer broke, probably due to the over-excessive use in a short period of time.

The staff then tried to use the back-up machine, which broke shortly after.

“Technology is wonderful when

it’s working,” said Janice Robertson, Program and Facilities Director. This has been causing some problems for some first year students who are not aware how necessary the card is. If first year students don’t live in residence, they often don’t get the information they need.

“Well I knew I needed one, I just didn’t know how important it was, that you would need it for everything. Had

I known, I would have gotten it over the summer for sure,’ said Rebecca Walsh, a first year arts student.

She wasn’t aware she needed the campus card until she went to the library and was not allowed to take material out on reserve or borrow books.

So she went down to the photo centre to get her photo taken for the catd, where she learned it was broken and wouldn’t be fixed for a few more weeks.

Walsh was told the library was aware the printer was broken and if she had her license and student number handy, they would let her borrow material.

“So then I walked in the rain to the library. I picked out my books out and went to take them out. The lady at the library desk said they weren’t doing that anymore.”

Walsh was then passed on to another library staff member who eventually let her take out books.

Another problem Walsh ran into was buying her books. She had to charge her books to her credit card because she didn’t have a campus card.

Please note that in the short term, the Campus Card will not

replace current proximity-based access cards.

A Campus Card will also be issued to off-campus users (Community users) at a cost of $10.

Although some students honestly weren't awate the cards are necessary, there are still some who have yet to go to the sports centre to pick them up Robertson said.
