THe Pivm Crop.—The Cornwallis, N. S., |correspondent or the St. John Sun says: The t yield of plums in this section will not be one |quarter of the average crop. At Grand Pre there isa total failure on many farms, owing to last year’s prolific yield. Black knot, however, is playing havoe with many trees. So far as can be ascertained there are no plums in or about Horton for export, and at Wolf- ville there is not half a crop. Your corres- pondent has been over nearly all the plym country, and thus speaks from personal know- ledge.

The meeting broxe up with a hearty vote of thanks to Prof. Saunders, and each farmer wended his way homeward, pleased with what he had heard, and resolved to apply something of it in his farming operations. All were loud in the praise of Father Burke for bringing the Professor to Tignish.

On Saturday last Professor Saunders stopped off at Alberton with Father Burke, and made a tour of that section of the country. The heavy, fertile lands of St. Mark’s, Lot 7, were visited. The Professor enjoyed the drive, and added to his stock of knowlecge of this beautiiul Island of ours. He thinks the far west has a great future before it as an agricultural country.

Boston Markets. Jury 11.

Eeos. —Receipts for the week 286 boxes, 56 bbls., 15,258 cases ; last week 33 boxes, 356 bbis., 14,168 cases. Receipts from the Provinces and from the west continue large and this stock is having a dragging sale with prices in buyer's favor. The best P. E. Island, Nova Scotia and New Brunswick lots are dull at 14 and 1l4$c. . Western have to be extra to bring 14c. and there is plenty of good stock offering at 13; and 14c. Eastern extras are scarce and bring extreme prices.

MacKeReEL.—Mackerel continue scarce and arrivals are being readily taken at full | prices. Some canned mackerel are coming forward and are in good demand at $1.40. No. 2 mackerel bring from $20 to $21, No 2 (large rimmed) $17, No. 3 (plain) $16. Canned lobsters unchanged.

Fish Bureau Reperts.

The weather is very unfavorable on the N. E Cape Breton coast and at Magdalen Islands. At Port La Tour and vicinity the shore fishing continues good, the bait used being small herring, obtained in small quantities. Bait generally is scarce on east- ernshore. The report of herring taken at Tancoak island on the 9th was correct.

Port Muvterave, July 11.—Captain Morash, of schr. Afton, of Lockeport, from | Magdalen Island fish grounds, reports that he has been in the North Bay two weeks, and could not get any codfish, nor see any vessel that did, up so far as North Cape, P. E. 1. ; also reports no mackerel.

Lonpon, July 12.—Sir Charles Russell demanded the productien of the books of the loyal and patriotic union, Court de- cided against the application, and Parnell, Davitt, Lewis and Sir Charles Russeli with- drew from the court room. The Commis- sion adjourned until Tuesday.

St. Pereassure, July 12.—The govern- ment has totally suppressed the Lutheran Church in Russia.

Lonpon, July 12.—It is reported that Gladstone and Morley have approved of the tenants defence league. The main object is to raise a fund forthe purpose of giving legal assistance to tenants against combin- ing landlords and not to divert the rent from the proper channels. The Parnellites will meet on Monday to consider Sexton's draft of the new league. A convention, at which the {new league will be formally fioated, will be held in Dublin, Parnell presiding.

O’Brien, in an interview yesterday, said that the chief feature of the new league was & vast national fund to save evicted tenants from the workhouse.

Military critics, who have made a tour of France since the opening of the Paris ex- position, express surprise at the rapid and formidable changes that have been made in the land defences of France under the pre- sent administration. A year or two ago the use of shells charged with melinite and other explosives gave the artillerist a sud- den and decided advantage in his contest with permanent works. A single melinite shell was found to blow a great trench through any ordinary kind of parapet.
