Training Children.

Itis to be remarked, however, that the principle, or theory, is not applied to the work of the public school, 0 house, the farm, the shop. On the other hand, it isthought that the study, the work, the occupation of early life, is that which will be most likely to engage the attention and fill the ideal of the grown min or woman. The mother who requires and compels her danghter to spend two hoursa day at the piano, does not require her to spend an hour and a half in the house of God,in attend- ance upon public worship,fer “fear she will not love to go to church when she is grown up.” The father who requires his son to follow aplow or handle a mechanic’s tools during the six days of the week, is fearful that, if required to attend the Sabbath-School, or the public worship of the Sabbath, he may get a distaste for it. And so the daughter and the son grow up with nolove for God's house, no idea of the sacredness of holy time, no knowledge of God’s holy word, and father and mother perhaps wonder how it can be, and mourn over the way- wardness of their children, asking brethern and sisters to pray for them.

Mrs. Harriet Beecher shows the fallacy of the theory that a strict obser- vance of the Sabbath begetsa distaste for it, when, speaking of the strictness with which it was formerly observed in New England, to the question whether it did not beget such a dis- taste, she replies “No, it did not,” and adds:

“The effect o the system was to in-' grain into our character a veneration for the Sabbath, which no friction ot after-life would cover efface. I have lived to wander in many climates and foreign lands where the Sabbatn is an unknown same, or where it is only re- coguized by noisy mirth, but never has the day returned without breathing of religious awe, and even a yearning for the unbroken stillness and the simple devotion of the Puritan Sabbath.

says :—The question as to the value and | the use of coal ashes has been for a long time an interesting one and is getting to be more and more of a question, as

the use of coal extends. One of the most desirable uses for coal ashes is_ to

place around the stems of currants bushes, of quince trees, and the Monn- tain Ash, in order to gheck, the ravages ofthe borer. The ashes for this pur- pose are heaped up about the stem to a height of perhaps, six or eight inches and extending about two feet from the trunk, ‘The explantation is that the ashes afford mechanical protection and alsoare of advantage as a malch in maintaining moisture anc cool tempera- ture for the soil.

A clergyman in Durham, England, some short time since, taught an old man, in bis parish to read,and found him an apt pupil. After his lessons were finished he was not ableto call for some time, and when he did, he only found the wife at home. ‘How’s John?’ says he. ‘How does he get on with his reading?’ ‘QO, nicely, sir.” ‘Ah, I sup- pose he il read his bible very comfort- ubly now?’ ‘Bible, sir! Bless you, he was out of the bible into the newspapers long ago.’
