The Finalists in Brief Candidates for UPEI Presidency

Dr. Dianne Common is currently Vice-President Aca- demic and Professor of Education at the University of Regina. Common was most recently Head of the Depart- ment of curriculum and Instruction and Professor of Edu- cation at Pennsylvania State University. She holds a PhD in Educational Administration and Curriculum Studies from the University of Ottawa.

Dr. Lawrence Heider is currently the Acting President at UPEI. He was most recently the Dean of the Atlantic Vet- erinary College. He holds a Doctor of Veterinary Medi- cine degree from Ohio State University.

Wade MacLauchlan is currently Professor of Law and Director of the Centre for Property Studies at the Univer- sity of New Brunswick. MacLauchlan was most recently Dean of Law at the UNB. He holds a Masters in Law de- gree from Yale University.

Dr. Deborah Poff is currently Vice-President (Academic) and Professor in the College of Arts, Social and Health Sciences at the University of Northern British Columbia. Poff was most recently Dean of the Faculty of Arts and Science at UNBC and, prior to that, was Director of the Institute for the Study of Women at Mount Saint Vincent University. She holds a PhD in Philosophy from the Uni- versity of Guelph.

Sue showed up a week later, ready and willing to answer any questions stu- dents might have about sex (at ten bucks a pop).

Other successful events that occurred during the week include the Pancake Breakfast where some rather tasty flapjacks were served up, and Wednesday night Trivia, which apparently was packed as usual.

Not all events were as successful, such as the Madhat concert where at- tendance was low (a mere three people showed up), and the pubcrawl, where only thirteen individuals were psyched for a night on the town.

Saturday was the big night. The Watchmen, a well known Winnipeg-based band

played at the Barn, and put on an amazing show for the highly energetic sold-out crowd,

“This was one of the best shows UPEI has seen,” says Dougan. The infamous Rude Mechanicals and This Minor Tremble (of Ottawa) opened the show, and both bands also seemed to go over well. Being a wet/dry event, there were plenty of under- age fans, and also lots of faces from off-campus.

“Although there wasn’t as big of an overall turnout as we would have liked, everything was lots of fun and the crowd was there when we needed them {money wise],” says Dougan.

Some of the low at- tendance and lack of partici- pation could be attributed to the fact that it was a busy

week for many students, and some found activities to be a bit expensive.

One student, who was asked why they didn t take part in any of the events, commented, “I m lazy.”

Another student re- plied, “1 m cheap and I have no school spirit.”

At least they’re hon- est.

But for the students that did choose to get in- volved, they certainly weren’t disappointed.

Tyler and Matt also wanted to give a shout out to the many people who offered a helping hand: Matt Hogan, Tim Willis, Jeff Smith, Julie Fitzpatrick, Alanna Snowie, Jocelyn MacSwain, Candace Francis and the Panther Lounge staff.
