Steel Co., with commendable enteprise, have commenced the manufacture of railway fish plates, and will thereby retain many thousands of dollars, which would otherwise be sent out of the Province. The company recently tried the experimentiof rolling light steel rails, producing an article fully equal to the best imported.

Tux 8. 8. Coban, on her outward trip this _m., took as part cargo one of the finest lots of fat cattle and sheep ever shipped from this Island. Among the lot we were sorry to no- tice a fine Jersey Heifer, bred and reared by the Hon. T. H. Haviland and_ recently sold by him to Richard Gill, Esq. This heifer was too valuable for exportation and should have been kept here for breeding purposes.

Tur results of the recent strikes in Chicago promise to be far-reaching and terrible. Hun- dreds of workingmen in the lumbering districts with their families are reduced to destitution, while in the city itself building operations, involving an outlay of ten million dollars, have been abandoned for the present, practi- cally closing the building season and threaten- ing an army of workmen with compulsory idleness for the rest of this year.

Vezy Conerocen, a grandson of Sir Vezy Colclough, came to this country with his father from Teatrim Abbey, County Wexford, ireland, in 1818. He settled in Lynn, Mass., and has three sons, William, a shoemaker, Alexander, a carpenter, and George, a coal dealer. He has just ascertained that he is sole heir to the Tentrim Abbey, estate, which furnishes an income of £10,000 a year. He will start for Ireland on the lst of June

I~ Lincoln County, West Virginia, on Mon day night, Mrs. Margaret Dounan, a widow, became insane from religious fanaticism. She said she had been called pee by the Lord to sacrifice the lives of herself and her 3 children to satisty the divine wrath. Arming herself with a sharp won knife she made her way to the room occupied by her three daughters, aged 8, 10, and 12 years, cut the throat of each child, and plunged the reeking blade deep into her own heart. The bodies were

discovered by the neighbors.

Now that the policemen are on their anaual crusade against filthy yards, etc., we would suggest that they visit the neighborhood oi the Railway Station, and report upon the Sithy odour which emanates from the stag nant pools in that neighborhood. For many years past the people living in that Vicinity have been petitioning the authorities to grant them some relief from this nuisance, but thei complaints were, to use a common expression, ‘let in one ear and out the other. his is not as it should be. A serious stabbing affray took place at Bay Verte on Sunday on Siard the bark Blanche, Capt. Foster. A sailor named William Smith, of Liverpool, G. B., was teasing a negro named Harry Williams, of Barbadoes, when the latter drew a knife and stabbed Smith in the side, inflicting a very ugly wound, and also gave him a severe cut across the right wrist,

Monpay next, being the Queen’s Birthday, will be observed as a public holiday. A royal salute of 21 guns will be fired at 12 o'clock, at Fort Edward, by No. 2 Battery of Garrison Artillery, under command of Capt. Moore. The Princess of Wales leaves here for Pictou at seven, affording an opportunity for pleasant excursion ata low rate. St. Peter's Boys’ Band will be in attendance, and among the attractions at Pictou will be a football match between teams from this city and Pic- tou. * * ° Several fishing and shooting parties have also been organized.

We publish to-day the programme of the entertainments to be given in St. Peter's Schoolroom on Wednesday and Thursday evenings next. As may be seen at a glance the programme is a good one and the names of those who take part is a sufficient guar- antee that nothing will be wanting to carry it out in a_ successful manner. Tar St. John ‘“‘Sun” says that late on Wednesdey night a number of young men with a lantern and numerous picks and shovels might have been seen wending their way to- wards the Olive property on King Street, Carleton. After looking around to see that there was no one in sight the men commenced digging near the base of a large tree and con- tinued their work without stopping even to wipe the perspiration from their faces until nearly daylight. Their object was to unearth a crock of gold supposed by some to have been buried there by the widow of a marine who left considerable money. _It is needless to say that the search of the men for the treasure was without avail, but it is under- stdyd that they intend to resume the work at an chrly dey.
