IS PROSPERITY BAD FOR RELIGION.

The New York Tribune recently stated, and the Financial Review approvineg re- peated. the statement that“the old saying that pmsperity is bad for religion seems to be borne out in the year just closed.” It would be interesting to know upon what facts or ﬁgures these two papers base this remarkable statement.

It is doubtful whether any more persons than usual are reading the Bible as litera- ture, or that the large sales of other books have in any way inﬂuenced the sale of Bibles. If. therefore, the sale of Bibles l has increased during the last year it would indicate increased interest in re- ligion and the churches. What are the facts? Since July 1, on which date the largest edition of Bibles on record was printed by a Chicago Bible publishing house, that house has been unable to ﬁll its orders, and is today over £1,000 copies behind its sales. Another edition of like number with the ﬂrst.now on the presses, will be consumed by the trade by Dec. 1. Never before has 'a Chicago publisher sold over 15,000 copies of the Bible in a year, while the sales of this one house have been three times that number in six months. There is no reason. to suppose that what is true in one city as to Bible ‘
