At Dublin a singular breach of promise case was tried inthe Common Pleas, before Chief Justice Morris and a special jury. The usual position of the parties was re- versed, the gentieman being the plaintiff and the lady the defendant. The plaintiff a butcher named Knowles. made the ac- quaintance Of Mrs, Caroline Elizabeth Ver- schovle [now Mulligan] the defendant, in counens t, on board a steamboat during the voyage from Liverpeot to Dublin. was the widow of ¢ ‘aptain Verschoyle, mise tress of a fine residence—Koebuck Hall—in the County of Dublin, and mother of 4hree children. Knowles was a widower, with one chiid.. The acquaintance so rapidly ripened that ina short time she consented to become his bride. Being of different re: ligions there was some difficulty about their marriage in fodggh se and they went to Livs erpool, whe they found it nec essary to stop four si n days before they could get married by the registrar, the expenses o! the sejourn, which he swore amounted to £150, being paid by the plaintiff. In the meanti me the lady s friends influenced her to break off the match, and she returned to Dublin without the plaintiff. She after. wards married & dealer in_ periodicals named Andrew Mulligan, who is now mass ter of Roebuek Hall, and a co-defendant in the suit. The examination of the plaintift caused great merriment. After twenty minutes deliberation the jury gave him £20) damages.

Glover, ihree ve ry valuable dogs of the celebrated Leor iberg breed. These animals are almost worldsrenowned for their size, beauty, sagacity, and fidelity. They are an improved breed, resulting from crossing the Newfoundland dogs with the renowned St. Bernard dogs and the fine Pyrenean races. These dogs are the favorites of emperors, kings, and rich nobility, etc., and fetch as high a prise as £00 to £100 sterling each. The Prince of Wales possesses one. Herr Verkruzen has brought them all the way from the borders of Switzerland. The true Newfoundiand dog has almost disappeared

here; but by the thoughtful kindness of Herr Verkruzen, an improved breed may

now be obtained by this importation of new blood, and ultimately become a source of profit to the couniry, as such fine dogs will bring a high price all the world over. It will be necessary to cross them, in time, with the best Newfoundland dogs, selecting the strongest and best-built. In due time we shali thus be able to boast of having the finest breed of dogs in the world, and our justly celebrated Newfoundland dogs will be superseded by a superior race. It is easy to imagine that the Governor will be overrun with applications for specimens.
