He barked softly. He was an- swered by a lOW whine. It was so low that. only keen ears like Red- dy's could have heard it. It was a whine of pain and fright and de- spair. It was a whine of help- lessness. That Fox was hurt. There was no doubt about that.

That is. he would have been handsome if his coat had not been badﬂ/ rum- pled, the fur dirty and with bits of dead leaves clinging to it. Fast to one foot. the cruel, merciless steel jaws relentlessly crushing it. ivas a trap. Raddy saw it at once. He knew now what was wrong.‘ It was something very wrong, so wrong that it could hardly have been more ivrong. Dreadful guns were bud. but traps like this were wqrse.
