The Proposed Railway Transfer.

Wer publish to-day an excellent letter dealing with this matter in a reasonable and basiness-like way. It is pleasing to know that the people themselves are think- ing and talkir g aud writing about the ques- tion which has been raised, and that Mr. Davies’ over hasty denunciation is itself de- nounced by his constituents. The people are evidently ready to take advantage of the opportunity which may be afforded to press for and obtain the railway facilities of which they were, in the days that are past, unfortunrtely deprived by the Opposition politicians. These latter gentlemen are always the same. As they were twenty years ago, so they are now—opposing, de-

sure. They have not even the grace to be penitent for their former blunders. The Patriot had the hardihood, a few days ago, to declare that ‘‘there was no mistake about branch railways for the Island not being obtained when the Liberal party was in power.” We venture to say that the people of Belfast and Murray Harbor are not of this opinion, seeing that they have for well nigh twenty years labored under the great disadvantage of being out of reach of the railway facilities enjoyed by the people of every other im- portant section of the Province and of Canada, and that they are likely to con- tinue so, unless sume special arrangement can be made in their behalf. What the Patriot says about railway subsidies voted by the tories is not at all applicable to the point. By the bugabvo representations of the Hon. David Laird and others of his kidney, the opportunity to afford railway facilities to Belfast and Murray Harbor, when they were sffsrded other parts uf the Province, was just. A good opportunity to remedy the blunder of that time has not since occurred. Mr. L. H. Davies bas denounced, off-hand, a propesal which, if adopted, might be turned to good account. No second opportunity to give Belfast and Morray Harbor railway facilities will, if

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR The Proposed Railway Transfer.

A VOICE PROM THE COUNTRY, Srir,—I notice a very timely article in Tue Examiner of the 2nd inst., on the proposed transfer of the Intercoloniel Railway to the C. P. R. Company. The Patriot of the 8:h inst., in commenting on this editorial, attempts to draw a herring across the track by saying “Here is therub., THe ExaMINer is trying to make capital for Mr. D. Ferguson as a candidate for Eastern Queen’s County District.” I am not now disposed to discuss the question whether Mr. Davies, Mr. Ferguron, Mr. Welsh, or any one else should represent this district in the House of Commons 4s there will be ample time to discuss the merits of these gentlemen on the eve of an election. What is of far mere importance to us at present is the question of the transfer of the Government railways to the C. P. R Company, and if in the conditions of trans- fer the tunnel across the straits and branch | railways to Rustico, New London, Beltast snd Murray Harbor, should not form part of the contract ?

Although the C. P. R. Company for several years was regarded by many Can- adians as a very great evil and a dengerous monopoly which sooner or later was sure to be the ruin of this fair Dominion, yet to- day all men of any intelligence are willing freely to admit that the company have not ouly completed their contract to the letter, years before they were required to do it, but have given to Canada a much better railroad, with more and better accomoda- tion then even the most sanguine of their friends expected—and are now extending branch lines, building magnificent hotels and opening upthe country for sett]lsment in a most satisfactory manner, until to-day all classes speak highly of the C. P. R. Compaty as well as of our great Northwest. That the Company kave done very much better for the country as well asfor their shareholders than anyone expected, in the face of the most desperate and determined opposition of leading politicians and rival insticutions, no onecan deny. We have, therefore, in the past history of the Com- pany the best possible prvof of their ability to manage the government railways much

The St. Olaf called here on her way to the Magdalen Islands on Monday evening, returning on Wednesday morning with mails and passengers. To-night (Thursday) she will leave here on her last trip for the season. Captain Lamaister enjoys the con- fidence ef the public, and it is hoped that next spring, when the mail service is re- sumed on this route, he will be again in command.

The repairs on the breakwater are nearly completed for this year. A block of wood and stone at @ weak spot on the inside of the work has lately been constructed under the foremanship of Mr. George Rice, of Souris West. Everyone interested in the welfare of Souris is interested in the proservation of its breakwater. It is hoped, therefore, that a sum will be granted next session of Dominion Parliament, sufficient to build a slope all the way alongthe seaside of the work, Thuis will takeseme few thousand dollars, but it will be money well spent, as without it there is no doubt but the old work .uust eventually give away.

The county court is at the present time iu session at Souris, Judge Reddin presiding. The dock is a large one—chiefly dealing with pigs. The case of Chaisson vs. Sweeny was disp sed of Wednesday after- noon. This case was interesting and very imtricate. Two pigs lost their owners, or the owner lost his pigs. At any rate, some- body else had two pigs which attracted the’! eye of the man who had lost his. This re-) sulted in the latter claiming the pigs in possession of the former, and this in turn finally ended in the abduction of these two) pigs. The pigs were kept all summer and | grew and became fat, The mea from whom the pigs were abducted goes to law and his pigs are ordered to be returned. Thus the pigs were fattened for market for this man gratis. Another pig case, that of a dog having attacked a pig, injuring it badly. This case is no yet disposed of.

The Minister, anxious to comply with the request of his supporters in the Commons, and not being qualified himself to test the applicant's qualificauon, men are often appointed whe never should have been, and never would have been, if the head of the Department was himself an expert. On the other hand, the President of the C. P. R. Company ia a thorough master ef his profession, who has made railroading a life study, and who pro- bably stands to-day among railway manag- ers without a peer. No political influence has any weight with him in choosing his subordinates. Qualification is the only passport to offices of trust and responsibil- ity. The result is efficient management at a minimum cost, Again, we require a fast line of steamships on the Atlantic between Canada and Great Britain, a service which the Government up to the present time have failed to secure, although they were, | understand prepared to give a subsidy of $500,000 per year.
