Dear Union Members:
Do we sometimes build fences around us? One o! the molt popu- lar of these fences is beverage alco- hol. Alcohol fences in motor re- sponses. One out of every five killed in automobile accidents had been drinking.
Hands and feet move more slow- ly, eyes see and ears hear less ra- pidly because alcohol has fenced in the motor responses.
Alcohol fences in the power of judgment. Who has not heard the loud laughter of the drunken drink- er? Who has not heard the fool- ish bragging and seen the dizzy staggering of the boy under the influence? Alcohol has fenced in their judgment. ' Alcohol fences in the sense of fit- neas.
The language of well-dressed and well-educated people on bus or train shows that alcohol had fenced in their sense of fitness.
Alcohol fences in the will power. l-low often do we hear a boy say. "I‘ll never indulge. l"ll never drink enough to make me do foolish things."
So said every alcoholic and ex- cessive drinker ln the country. The ability to say "No thank you." de- creases as consumption increases

The rooms were tastefully decorated for the Christ- mas season and a large lighted and trimmed tree was in one corner, around whirh Santa Claus called the children. presenting each with a silitahie gift together with candy and fruit. After this two moving pictures were shown to the chil- dren and after further entertain- mcnt cars provided transportation home for the youngsters.
On Christmas Eve and Christmas Day the rooms were again open to all members. '

The first month of the New Year has passed on. What have we ac. complishcd in our fight for free- dom from the pressure of the Brewers and the poison they brew? How many have supported our pa- per by sending in news items? I nm afraid the women of Quebec Province are thoughtless in that regard. Do they conside that it is the editor's job to fill the Page without assistance from them. If so. that position should be made clear to every Page Editor, who would then know just what was re- quired of her and feel free to pre- p!" a page and send it to the Head Editor at any time. We see quite often articles about religious freedom and hear even so-cnlled Christians ranting about their right to drink if they want to. We would remind them that “even our Lord pleased not him- self." hut the Father who sent Him. Religious Freedom means freedom from evil‘ habits, freedom to think clean wholesome thoughts. Free- dom tn follow the palh which "our Master has trod," and not freedom to follow every evil dictate sug- gested by ihnse who would drag u\ down in the lovrest levels. A proposal to lh-a Houst- of Com- mons in Citlawa, in May, was rated by the Press ns ".1 highly impopu- lnr reform." This proposal was that the alcoholic content of beer be lowered and that all liquor tax" be reduced. The proposer, Mr. A, F1. Robinson, snlrl that “the Gov- ernment had extracted hundreds of thousands of dollars in taxes from the poor unfortunate people who drink." Also that. the remaining revenue be tised for temperance education in public schools. He suggested that if there were less revenue from liquor the various governments would show more in- ierest in temperance. L. L. Smith of. Clarencevllle. The Catholic Women's League meeting was held at the home of Mrs. John A. Callaghan Willi the president Mrs. A. D. O'Brien in the chair, and secretary. Mrs. Michael Aiiearn. Meeting was opened with prayer by the Rev Chaplain, Father Monaghim. Roll call showed l4 members present. with one new member. The minutes of the pre- vious meeting were read and ap- proved and the secretary also read all correspondence received since last regular meeting. The follow- ing new business was transacted. It was planned to hold a Valentine dance, also a pantry sale in the near future. Donation to Tuber- culosis League for Christmas Seals which had been overlooked. was ordered to iic sent to the League. Mr. Henry Clarke oi the Alberlon Film CounclLkindly screened films for the meeting. 'Ihe films which were of Canadian scenes. were much enjoyed by those present at the meeting. Here Daniel Walsh observed every form of amusement that he had ever fancied in his wildest moments: dancing. card parties. horse-racing, betting. searching for wealth, indeed anything and every- thing to suit the different persons who lived there.

When the people had uttered, these words of warning they all joined together in a series of ter- rible shrieks that froze the blood in Daniel Walsh's veins, and be begged his guide to get him out of the place as quickly as possible.
Arriving at one of the few exits. his conductor bade him farewell with these words: “We now part. but one year from today we shall meet again, to be together always."
