That this was done was evidenced by the fact that in 1897 the deficit was $38,000, although $46,785 bad been raised in taxes, In the year 1889 they lived up to their reputa- tion, and the deficit was $35,516 while they received $46,167 from taxes. It did not make any difference what amount of taxes was collected, a deficit of $40,000 or $45,- 000 liad to be maintained.

From 1880 to 1890 the Conservatives paid $37,183 in interest, or an average of $3,380 a year. Netwithstandiag the large amount the Lib-rale raised in taxes, they paid fcr interest $94,000 an average of $15,527 ayear or $16,000 more than the Cosservatives. Last year they paid $18,000 for interest, and the estimate for this year ie $18,900. The interest barometer indicates the extent of the debt. The people were, year after year, aesured that revenue and expenditure weuld be made to mest; but as regularly aa the years rolled by the deficit was ferth. coming.

The debt cf the zrovince is $536,000. Add___to this $25,000 debentures for the annex and $25,000 for the Priocs of Wales College,ane it wil! be seen that the debt is upwards f $600, 000. They have also passed a bill ex- pending $400,000 for a bridge across the Hillsuorongh. This wiil bring the deb up to $1,000,000. The farmers, upe whose shoulders this burden wil mostly fall, find it hard erougl to get slong now; but when they ar compelled to pay interest amountiag $30,000 per year wh le the country is go- iug back at the rate of $45,000 a year, it becomes &@ Serious matter.

On the 27th of April, the Government owed the banke $53,000. Of tnie sum there was owingto the Bank of Nova Scotia $42,000, to the Merchaot« Bank of Halifax $10.894.78 and tothe Merchants Bank of P. E. Island $317.64. This ie in addition to the statement in the Public Accounts, and the money bas been drawn eiuce the let of Januarv.

The Leader borrowed $30,000 from the Credit Foncier, a foreign instuution, at the rate of 44 percent. If the Govern- ment can float debeatures at 3 per cent, why borrow from the Credit Foncier at 4} percent ? In addition to these sums which they borrowed since the 3let of December, they also borrowed $11,000 by private loans. On the let of January they received $90,000, half the yearly subsidy, and with alithese receipts tbey fell behind to the extent previously pointed out.
