Typhoid fever of a malignant type has reappeared amongst us once more. The family of Mr. Thomas Steele, Souris West, is numbered with the afflicted. His second son, Alfred, aged 21 years, succumbed to its Creadful effects on Saturday last. Three other members of the family are also stricken down with the disease, of which two are in a very precarious condition. Much sympathy isfeltfer Mr. Steele. The wife of Mr. Joseph N. MeDonald is a victim of the same malady.

A Philadelphia undertaker invited some actors aud other friends toa dinner. The Princess Dolgorouki, morganatie widow of the late Czar, recently left Kiss- ingen, where she had expected to spend the entire season, very abruptly, on hear- ing of the impending visit to that place of the Grand Duke Vladimir, whom she re- gards as her bitterest foe. Her troubles and sorrows are beginning to show their ravages upon her beautifu! face and form, and she has abandoned all hope of ‘ever ire entering the society of which she once was a brilliant ornament. She now de- votes her entire attention to the training of her children, and particularly to the education of her only sen, a handsome and lgifted lad, who closely resembles the ancient prince s of the Dolgorouki line.

A writer in the Independent protests against the custom of burning leaves in the autumn. He insists that it is the worst p ssible economy, after nature has labored |fur six months to work the elements of the lair into material for roil, to send them back again to the air. The leaves make ithe best possible bedding for a horse or cow, and are very serviceable as a covering |for strawberries, raspberries, tender shrubs ‘and plants, and forthe lawns, After t eing used as a bedding, or mulch, they make a

valuable manure. These facts are so ob- | vious that they sound like axioms, yet they ‘are often curiously forgotten or lost sight of in domestic and agricultural economy.
