The' Frefful Voice

stress. A sudden sweetness may possess. Old Mother Nature.

In Farmer Brown's sugar house over in the maple grove two little people shivered and shook. One was Peter Rabbit; the other was Whiteioot the Wood Mouse. Some one was trying to get into that sugar house. Both were sure that whoever it was it muat be an enemy.

For a long time they listened to the sound of teeth gnawing on wood. it was an unpleasant sound. Once whoever it was went up on the roof, but soon came down again. Oi the two little listeners Peter Rabbit was the most fright- ened. There was no way for him to get but unless when the door was opened he could dodge out past whoever it was out there. The little brown-coated. white looted Mouse up in the eaves could get out any time he wanted to, he had a hole under the eaves, a hole he was in the habit of using whenever he wanted to go outside.

It seemed to Peter a long. long time that he crouched as far back under the bunk as he could get and listened to those dreadful gnawing teeth. Really it wasn't such a long time. Time always seems long when you are afraid.

new sound. Peter Rabbit drew a long breath when he iic..... it. it was a voice. It wasn't a pleasant voice. It was a fretfui voice. it was a complaining voice. But right then Peter thought it was the sweetest voice he had ever heard. Little Whiteioot J u m p e d down on the bunk and lean ed over the edge. "Do you hear that, Peter Rabbit?" he squeaked. "That is prickly Porky out there."

Peter hopped out from under the bunk. "I knew it was Prickly Porky as soon as I heard his voice". said Peter. "What do you suppose he is doing out there?"

Whiiefoot gave a squeaky little chuckle. "I would say he's trying to get in," said he.

"What do you suppose he wants to get in here for?" asked Peter.
