West-African Aluminum, a com- pany incorporated in the Gold Coast colony. holds certain concess- ions of bauxite properties. hydro- electric sites and other tights in that territory.

It is understood that a British Government mission is going to the Gold Coast to investigate the hydro-electric prospects on the Volta Rivcr and its tributaries. This has already bccn investigated corm- mcrcially. -

If a dam were put up for irrigat- ion and to improve navigation, it would be a further long step to- wards opening up the Gold Coast. Scmc major use would be required for the hydro-electric power from the dam. Aluminum needs more power than any other industry.

It is thought that an aluminum smelter must be built somewhere in the stalling area to save dollars. At present Britain and other sterling countries have to get most of their aluminum from Canada. and pay dollars for it.

Britain‘: current contract for Canadian aluminum has had to be cut by extending it from the end of this year to the end of next March.

At One time it was conjectured that Anglo-Transvaal. throtlsh its American connections (Kennecott Copper). might enlist the technical knowledge and backing of United States aluminum interests. 1t is thought here that this matter might have been affected by the recent death in an air crash in Quebec of three head: of Ken- riewtt.

Today‘: announcement implied that Anglo-Transvaal has decided to team with the Canadians as re- gard: alwminum.
