WASHINGTON (AP)-Those pio tures of the Mayflower ll. aalliol serenely along the coast. In 50 pretty and romantic its easy W forget that the original vovlll was rough. cruel and frightening.

And in a day when continent! and oceans are crossed in hours instead of'months. this leiaurel! sail across the Atlantis hnl seemed a delightful luxury.

Yet to those who were to be-

come known as pilgrims. embark-

ing on a strange ocean for an un- known land, it was a grim Ind dreadful business.

And since we tend to forget the ordeal: of the pioneers. let a look back to 1620.

INNUMERABLE SQUABBLES

To begin with. there were in- numerable squnbblea over financ- ing the iourney. As usual. promot- ers dreamed of a quick killing. As usual, they .were to be dill!-

Then one of the two oflllllll ships. the Speedvldl. PNVOII 135' aeaworthy. Twice they "I Wi- twice they had to turn back. Oddly nothing in particular was found wrong with the speedweu. In the words of William Bradford. gov- ernor and hiatu-inn of Plymouth. she had to be abandoned because of "general weakness."

Away at last. But this was an pleasure cruise.

The Mayflower was larlc I0! her time. She had been in the Mediterranean wine trade. and had hauled fish. timber. luI'p9IIi' tine and tar from Norway.

But she was overcrowded now, with 102 passengers and all their bclongingl.

CRUDE CONVENIENCES

George F. Willlaon says in his book, Saints and Strangers:

”.-is the ship had only the crud- est kind of conveniences and no sanitary facilities, as there were no provisions for bathing or even cursory washing (even if it had hccn a practice of the time to in- tiulgel. the air in the narrow. crowded quarters below deck must lime been nauseating at out and ai worst simply staggering."

economics for the Public Works Department. died in hospital on May 27th. after a lengthy illness She was 44 years of age. Born and' educated in Berlin Germany. she was the daughter of the late. Mr. and Mrs. Paul Emile Wunsch. She was married to Dr. Weeks at Oxford. England. in 1938.

Mrs. Weeks was a member of St. Marc's Untied Cliurch. Surviv- ing bcsides her husband are two sons: Peter A. D. and Andrew 5. both at home. and one sister, Sgt. Lilli M. Wunsch. of the WRAF. Newton. Notts. England. She came by plane to be with her sis- ter before her death.

The funeral service was held on May 29th, in the Radmore Stew- art funeral chapel. and was con- ducted by Rev. Carson Duquctte. assisted by Rev. Dr. Norman Coll. a former pastor of the Weeks fam- ily. and Rev. Dr, W. T Ross Flam- ington. president of Mount Allison University. Sackville, N. B.. who flew to Ottawa to participate in the service. He was an intimate friend of Dr. and Iilrs. Weeks. and his tribute to the memory of Mrs. Weeks was most touching and im- pressive.
