In this province there ig no profit in growing grain or potatoes fur expurt. There is instead a positive loss if we take into account the cost of produc- tion and also the loss of suil fertility we sustain. lt is imperative, on account of our great distance from the English market, that we condense our exports s0 asto re- duce freight toa minimum, and not only that, but we muat by an exercise of skill re- duce them to the form that will pay us beet. Say for instance, we reduce our vats co meal. we could place it on the market at a much less expense for freight, but we would be selling our soil fertility just the same a3 if we sold the oats. Same with wheat, except, if weretainthe bran we would save something for the soil,
If we reduce our potatoes to starch we lose all the fertilizing ingredients they contain, which itis claimed is about .8c worth for every bushel. 1 have no place for a starch factory in our farm ecouomy, Again, you may feed your produce to cattie and sell it in beef, or to hogs and turn it into pork. In doing this you will return most of the plant food to the soil. But in this business western competition is too much for us. The great ranching districts of the American and Canadian Northwest, where cattle live out all winter, can pro- duce beef cheaper than we can, and can undersell usin our own maritime markets after paying freight for thousands of miles. So with pork. The corn states can produce pork very much cheaper than we can. Now instead of seliing the raw products, or feed- ing them to produce meat, let us feed them to milch cows aad sell them in dairy pro- duce,
The steer will manufacture our grain and roots into beef, but the beef will barely sell for what will pay for the feed. The imilch cow will only tarn them into milk, and then we use our skill in turningthat milk into a highly concentrated and valuable food. Here is where the profit comes, in selling our skill, and we get another profit in saving much more of the plant food than if we sold our produce in beef. Jt is claimed, and] think has been proved by some of the foremost agriculturists in America, that the feed that will make a beef animal increase one pound in live weight will, if fed to a good milch cow, produce a pound of butter or two pounds of cheese.
Five cents per pound live weight is more than we can get for our best beef cattle, while the butter, if good, ought to be worth at least 20 cents, antl the cheese, after paying for manufacture, would be worth l5centa. This would in cheese be three times better money return for our produce than in beef. And then, as a leading dairyman says, “‘we would have the cow left to repeat the experiment for years, while our beef animal would have to be replaced by another.” Thus, by using out reasoning faculties and intelligently manipu- lating the milk of the cow, which is only our grass and grain in another form, and by sell- ing the product of our skill, we may add greatly to our revenue and be in a position to win our bread with a much smaller expend- iture of muscle.
In our next we will speak of co-operative dairying and how it should be carried on to in sure success. Ww,

Pownal Sehool.
The trustees of Pownal school heid their monthly examination on Friday, 23rd Dec Miss McLecd’s (the junior department) was first visited. Here is where the young ides is first taught how to shoot, and although the day was very cold and stormy, we found some twenty little ones all looking bright sud happy. The pupils acquitted themselves very creditably in the different branches. Miss McLeod is still maintain- ing her well-earned reputation. The best of order is maintained.
The senior department, presided over by Miss Annie Burhoe, was then examined. During the examination the pupils showed a very thorough knowiedge of the different branches taught. There was a marked im- provement in reading writing, geography and arithmetic. Misa Burhve has taken up the branch of agricultural chemistry, snd the class answered many questions op the subject very promptly. e heartily spprove of its introduction, The registers show a splendid average attendance, which speaks well for parents, pupils and teachers.
The hour for closing having arrived, Mr. John Smith, senicr trustee, passed around afine basket of apples. This was a very pleasing feature of the exsmination. Mr Smith’s kindness and generosity was dul) sppreciated by all present. Literary Notes.
The first of the unpublished material bh: Henry Ward Beecher, recently ablished by the Ladies’ Home Journal, will appear in the January issve of that magazine, and presents among ciher things, the great preacher's hitherto unprinted opinion on **Wine Drinking on New Year's Day.”
Two famous preachers have written striking articles soon to be printed in the Ladies’ Home Journal; one by Rev. Morgan Dix, D. D., on ‘Are Society Women In- sincere?” and the other by Rev. John R Paxton, D. D., on “Are Women More Religious (han Men ?”
Strauss, the waltz wrie*, has seat over his new waltz, which the Ladies’ Home Journal is going to publish in its pages, and is said by musical judges to be one of the brightest pieces of dance music ever pro- duced by him,
The Empire says: Probably no book ever written in Canada will be looked for- wardto with a deeper general interest than the Memoirs of Sir John Macdonald now being pr , ated by Lis talented private secretary ani» imate friend, Mr. Joseph Pope. Some interesting particulars are gleaned from the correspondence made public to-day, wherein the Baroness Mac- donald states that she has given Mr. Pope free acc»ss to the ‘“‘mas# of valuable letters and papers which he had so carefully pre- served during his louy and eventful life,” and that Mr. Pope’s work will have the full approval and best wishes of Lady Macdonald herself, Mr, Pope certainly writes under very great advantagees. He knew Sir John well, and was the trusted confidant of that great statesman. Tnere must be many documents in the archives of the late Premier which will serve to throw light on Canadian politics and history, and we shall look with especial interest to the account of the years before Confederation, which are now receding into the past with ecanty his- torical materialto elucidate them. Mr. Pope, we believe, is making good progress with his labors, and ought ts be ready to give the Memoirs to the public in about a year. As has often been said, Sir John’s life was the whole history of Can- ada, and his biographer, with a knowledge of the man and in possession of documentary in- foi mation not accessible to anyone ese, can hardly tail to produce a very valuable contri- bu ion to our literature. Lady Macdonald has doue a real service to Canada by freely plac- ing ber late husband’s papers at the disposal of one 80 well qualified to utilize them as Mr. Pope, and, if ene further assists the work by some cont:ibutioa to the Memoirs of one who valued so 4 her judgment and iutellect, it will be a fitting thing.

The population of the Indian empire has risen within the memory of the present gen eration trom 220,000,000 to 289,000,000. Ir has been increasing at the rate of 2,500,000 annually, and is now rising at the rate o! 3,000,000. If no large famines occur it will considerably excved 300,000,000 at the end of the century now drawing to a close. Even inthe event of a decimaticn from these causes there will be an excess over the 300,000,000. This augmentation is co incident with a growth in means 4ud re- sources of livelihood and in material pros- perity of all kinds. The exportation of food grains in vast quantities continues. The average of population in the Indian empire is very moderate.
For all that, the density in some parts is considerable and in other parts too great. On the other hand, there is a large quantity of cultivated land still unused, the extent of which, according to the Fortnightly Review, can be fully known by experience alone Further, the existing cultivation can be made more and more productive by agricultural science, by development of irrigation ia detail, and by improved appliances for hasbandry. On the whole, there is fair reason to hope thai the magnificent «ea of land will be able to sustaio its le, and that the accession o! teeming millions, decade after decade, under the British rule may be welcomed without an afterthought.
