Shying Horses.

Shying is one of the most frequent causes of carriage accidents, yet with a correct knowledge of why a horse shies and the proper use of the reins, the shying may be partially cured, acci dents often averted. A _ herse shies from fear, and while keeping its eyes fixed on the cause of its terror, moves away from it as much as he can. The common practice of the drivers is to keep pulling the rein on the side he shies un. The consequence is, he runs you into danger he does not see—per- haps into a ditch, up a bank, or against some obstacle that overthrows your vehicle. You blame the horse, when you yourself have caused the accident by pulling his head towards the thing he shies at. A good driver always

Get Rid of Filthy Hog-Pens.

Whoever would raise hogs without disease (and this is necessary to obtain the highest profit) must get rid of the notion that the hog is naturally a filthy animal ; that filth is less distastetui and unhealthful to him than to the steer or horse, and that it is impossible be- cause of the nature of the animal to surround the hog with sanitary con ditions. Filth is a prolific source of dis- ease among all animals ; and because the hog is brought into contact with the most filth there is the most disease

among swire. Filth opposes the health and thrift of swine just as it

opposes the health of horse or man. The first step in growing hogs with- out disease is to keep fiitth away from them, to give them clean food, clean drink, clean = quarters, clean shelter.—F arming.

Multiply the square of the girth, expressed in feet, by five times the length, and divide the product by 21, the quotient is the weight, nearly, of the four quarters in imperial stones of14 lbs., avoirdupois. When the cattle are very fat the four quarters will be about one-tenth more, while in very lean cattle they will be one twentieth less than the weight obtained by the rule.
