Dear Editor,

I would like to take this opportunity to clear up any confu- sion that may have resulted from an article that appeared in the September 1 7th issue of the X-PRESS. The article to which I am referring is entitled ‘‘On the New Student Union Building...’’.

The building located at the corner of Belvedere Avenue and Mount Edward Road is NOT the new Student Union Building. However, as you may know, the Student Union is currently in the process of raising money to construct a new building. If there is any member of the Student Union who would like more information on this, please contact me at the Barn.

In closing I would like to emphasize that the intent of this letter is not to criticize the article or its writer, but merely to clear up any controversy.

This past summer I was a Student Researcher into the: services UPEI provides students with disabilities at Student Services. One of the main, and most important, objectives Student Services and I wanted to accomplish was an aware- ness to students with disabilities of this university’s serv- ices which is offered to them. This awareness was to be in the form of pamphlets.

My research lasted only eight weeks, so I only had time to make a rough draft of this brochure. I trusted that Student Services and the AVC Graphics Department would produce the final copy. The brochure was to be the most important outcome of my research; I was especially pleased that a campus map which listed all the parking spaces for people with disabilities and the accessible buildings would be included.

When I visited Student Services to see how the brochure was coming along, I was shocked. The idiots at the Graphics Department screwed up the campus map. Here, approxi- mately 1,000 pamphlets were printed with the wrong map!!! The campus map which is featured in the class timetables lists only one parking space for people with disabilities in my brochure.

Mr. McQuaid, you must have noticed on these new campus maps the *‘3-D look’’ of all the buildings. I believe it is too dark for a person with a visual impairment to see. For this reason I requested the Graphics Department draw the build- ings in basic geometrical shapes you know, the map we had last year). That way, a person who is visually impaired could see the map on this brochure.

But no! Student Services was left to draw up the map which I requested and photocopy it approximately 1,000 times. These maps were inserted into the brochures, but as you know, Mr. McQuaid, inserts were meant to fall out and lie unnoticed on the floor. Anyway, thank you Student Services for what you did -- it’s the thought that counts.

What the AVC Graphics Department did was unthoughtful and an embarrassment to me. I put a lot of work into this brochure. I know I was told that the Graphics Department was busy, but this brochure for students with disabilities could have waited to have the care in production it deserved. Now this brochure will have to wait two years to be revised -- I don’t think I can wait that long. I believe the Graphics Department owes me and Student Services a big apology.
