On Sunday, March 26 of last year, Eric ‘‘Eazy-E’’ Wright died of complications from AIDS in a Los. Angeles hospital. A week earlier he had issued a statement to his fans announcing he had full blown AIDS and warned others against the dan- gers of having multiple sex partners. This was just one of the many impor- tant messages he left behind to his legion of fans.

Born on September 7, 1963, Eazy’s reputation as a hustler was well established by the time he dropped out of high school in the 10th grade. He took the knowledge he learned from the streets of Compton, California, and in the late 80s focused it on the rap industry. Along with Ice Cube, Dr. Dre, DJ Yella and MC Ren he established one of the most controversial and commercially successful rap groups of all time. N.W.A. (Niggaz With Attitude) took their message of inner-city struggle to millions of fans worldwide. By the release of the group’s last album they had sold over 6 million records, not to men- tion the multi-platinum solo releases by Dre, Cube and Eazy.

As a businessman, Eazy continued his success with the crea- tion of his Ruthless record label. Among the groups signed were D.O.C., Michel’le and Bone Thugs n’ Harmony. This success only

aided his charitable nature with donations for organizations such as The City of Hope and the Make a Wish Foundation. With his passing, the music industry not only loses one of it’s pioneers but also one of the most influential figures in rap his- tory.

His legacy is carried on, how- ever, not only in his past musical contributions but as well as two new releases. From his Ruthless Records label comes, Str8 Off Tha Streetz Of Muthaphukkin Compton. With production nods going to DJ Yella and Eazy himself this is a must for rap fans and may prove to be Eazy’s most popular CD to date.

The second release put out by Priority Records contains 14 of Eazy’s greatest hits. Eternal E takes you from his solo beginnings with ‘*Boyz-N-The Hood”’ up to some of his latest releases such as ‘‘I’d Rather F--- You’’ and ‘‘Only If You Want It’’ featuring Naughty By Nature. Nothing could come close to capturing Eazy-e’s true essence but this is definatly some of his best stuff, and it’s all on one CD.

Even in death, Eazy-E’s suc- cess continues unimpeded and his legacy is assured to live on with these two new releases. Special thanks to ‘‘Bull’’ who introduced me to Eazy and his unique brand of music. Rest In Peace, Eric.
