Bert Leaves Monday

COMING up with novel ideas is something that comes a lot easier to some then to others. Some 0 us are not too bad at copying what somebody alse has shown us but originality isn’t easy for a great many of us.

However, there are some persons who revel in doing the un- expected. They can provide a laugh at any moment and still keep I barrel of tricks up their sleeve.

Saturday is the last day at St. Dunstan‘s University for such a chap. Austin Cuthbert McWade. better known to everybody as ‘Bert'. leaves Monday for Montreal where he will be employed.

‘Bert' worked in the Joe. Heuncssey stable at Charlottetown Driving Park for the past few summers and was never one to be bashful about singing the praisesof Joe's horses. This past summer he was high on Doug Hill’s Dominion Byrd and he had plenty of cause for boosting as Dominion Byrd had a terrific season. ‘Bert’ hasn’t stopped talking about the Hill Speedster and he is predicting even greater things for 196 .

Ever since leaving Queen Square School, 'Bcrt' has been a student at St. Dunstan's and for the past several years he has assumed the role of cheer leader at all college athletic contests. Nobody can dare say that he hasn't worked his heart out at the job and few colleges in the M'aritimcs could produce an equal to Austin Cuthbert. Recently he arrived at a St. Dunstan's game on he. st‘back and dragging on the ground behind the horse was the effigy of the visiting college. Before game time, Bert took off on prancing exhibitions up and down the field. Even if you made up your mind to stay in a serious mood. McWade would make you break that pledge.

’Cuihberi’s Last Stand'

TOMORROW he will again direct the SDU supporters. He will have his trusty cane on hand to serve as his baton. Chances are he will give out with his heatiest performance because it will be his last at St. Dunstan's.

In his own words it will he "(‘uthherts last stand" and It should be a humdinger. Bert will surely want to go out in a blaze of glory. He expects his Varsity Saints to hand a defeat to Dal- housie Tigers and this being the case. he should have plenty of chances to howl. As the curtain falls, he wil likely toss his cane into the crowd. We expect such a parting gesture.

SERIOUSLY. we will miss 'Bert' around Saints’ sport acti- vities and around the local raceway. You were never in danger of going melancholy with Mr. McWade around.

We watched ‘Bert‘ grow up with the rest of the Hayfield St. lads and we feel sorry to see him go from among us. However. many of his family are in the Montreal area and this will make things that much more pleasant for him.

We wish Austin Cuthbert the best of everything, We enjoyed knowing him these past 20 years and we hope he will come back and see us often.

If we haven't praised your horses enough. Bert. we hope you'll forgive us and keep in touch with all the doings here on Prince Edward Island.
