Calixto Garcia was libsrated from the Castle of Alicante on ‘Tuesday by order of the Governmeut, in consequence of a tele- gram from Captain General Blanco, declar- ing he had promised their freedom to Gar- cia and those who surrendered with him on condition that they reside out of Cnoba. Garcia™*arrived here on Wednesday at the office of the Minister for Colonies, and he will remain free on that condition.

The Basutos sacked and burned the Gov- ernment office and barracks at Mascu. Col. Bayley, with 500 men, is still besieged at that place. Carrington, with a small force, is besieged at Mafeteny, Reinforce- ments on the way.

VALPARAISO, Oct. 15.

Representatives of the three belligerents will meet on board of the United States man-of-war at Arica. It is understood one stipulation will e that hostilities may be continued peuding negotiations. Peru, it is reported, will refuse any cession of territory. The United States Minister has left Valparaiso for Arica to preside at the meeting.

Rome, Oct. 14.

The Pope has acceded to Cardinal Nina’s request to be relieved of the Secretaryship of State on account of ill health. It is stated Monsigner Jacobina will succeed him.

UNITED STATES. INDIANAPOLIS, Oct. 14.

Additienal returns last night and this morning show about the same ratio of gains. Jhe Republican majority on the State ticket will not fall short of 7,000. Congress will stand eight Republicans, five Democrats. The Republicans have a majority in both branches of the Legisla- ture.

Boston, Oct. 14.

Advices received up to a late hour this morning show that the Republican majority in Ohio will reach 22,000. Fifteen of the twenty Congressmen are Republicans, a gain of six.

In Indiana the Republicans gain two Congressmen. They also have a majority in both branches of the Legislature, insuring a Republican successor to United States Senator McDonald. Mr. Porter’s majority for governor will be between seven and eight thousand.

Five prisoners in Pictou jail set a straw bed on fire, Tuesday moraing, evidently expecting the jailor would go into the cell and put it eut, and then, after overpoweriug him, they would make their escape. But the jailor ‘* took the matter in at a glance,” and, letting the straw burn ont, smoked the prisoners beautifully, and then drenched them with water from the engine.

Recarpinc the diploma granted Mr. Me- Leod’s horse §‘‘ Blackfoot,” by the Judges at the St. John Exhibition, the owner desires us to state, that he did not send his horse to St. John to compete against horses from Prince Edward Island, but he sent him to compet¢ azainst New Brunswick horses, and finding that the Island horses would not be allowed to compete against the horses of New Brunswick, he lecked his horse ‘‘Blackfoot” in his stall on tho Exhibition grounds. While thus closed from the view of the Judges and the public a diploma was awarded Blackfoot for being an excellent animal, and§second to Mr., Cras- well’s horse. , Henry Longworth, Esq., the Island Commissioner, has sent Mr. Mcleod a letter testifying that Blackfoot was locked up when the Judges made the award.

Acapemy or Music.—To-night will be what is termed a sensational night, as the manage- ment offers the Life and Death of Dick Tuar- pin and Tem King, together with Kate Kear- ney. Monday evening is set apart for the benefit of Miss Louise Forster, upon which occasion she caters for the intellectual and educated element, intreducing the most bril- liant comedy in the English language, and in which the part of Duke Aranza has been the favorite characters with Garrick, Kean and all the greatest artists on the stage. It ranks with Sheridan s ‘* School for Scandal,” Shak- speare’s ‘‘Much ado About Nothing,” and will live as long as the English language is spoken. Doctor Creamer will sing, Mrs. Williams will play ajsolo, and the beneficiaire also sings. - Thursday is Cricketer’s night.
