The biggest change in the hockey world during the last two weeks was the New York Islanders and Buffalo Sabres swap meet. The Islanders traded their best non-producing player (the self-suspended Pat LaFontaine) for the Sabres’ best player although absent statistics-wise ( the not-quite matured Pierre Turgeon). Also involved in the trade were Randy Wood, Randy Hillier, and a draft pick (going to Buffalo); and Uwe Krupp, Benoit Hogue, and Dave McLIwain (leaving Buffalo for Long Island).

LaFontaine wanted out of the Islanders organization, but will Buffalo be able to satisfy him? Can Turgeon begin to play as he was expected to when he was drafted first overall in 1987? The other players involved are minor characters, but Wood had an assist in his first game as a Sabre. Who gets the advantage? The sabres gain a leader, but the Islanders get to develop Turgeon.

Another important event in the N.H.L. was Paul Coffey’s becoming the most offensively-oriented defenseman in history. Coffey surpassed former, Islander blue-liner Denis Potvin’s records. On Octo- ber 17th, Coffey recorded his 1,053rd point; just one week later, Coffey tied Potvin’s record for goals |

Panthers Clutch their PAWS on Maine and

The men’s basketball Panthers played an exciting exhibition game against the University of Maine on Sunday Nov. 3. A good sized crowd was on hand at the sports centre to watch two evenly matched oppo- nents. The Panthers fought hard all game long to keep pace with Maine. At one point in the second half, Maine led by fifteen points.

Both teams displayed exciting plays. The Maine Clippers made a great steal topped with a slam dunk which even panther followers had to admit was damn good. Immediately following, Peter MacKinnon shot a three pointer which meant it was now standing ovation time! T. Middleton of the Maine Clippers broke the \J. of Maine basketball scoring record

_ during the game and he was given a warm applause. The Panthers’ attack was led by R. Dixon, Peter MacKinnon, and M. Cameron. The final score was 88-86 in favour of Maine.

The next home game is Wednesday November 13th,

scored by marking his 818th. Coffey has not yet passed that record.

The Hockey Panthers played their third home game of the season Saturday night, and defeated the Mount Allison Mounties 6-3. the Panthers played a good game (they won, didn’t they?) but at times it was pretty boring. Things were slow for almost half of the second period; both teams looked lost on the ice.
