While a rapid heartbeat is not necessarily a sign of heart disease. it alarms many and they are quite right in trying to and the cause. In many cases ucav usness and emotional disturbances cause rapid heartbeat and an overactive thy- roid gland tgoitern alteys causes a rapid beating of the hurt. some- times a blocked nose or too much protein food (meat. eggs. fish) are to blame; the blocked nose cuts down the supply of oxygen in the air and the protein foods use up more oxygen during digestion than do other foods. Rapid heart beat is called tachycardia.

Just as men and women may be- come alarmed by rapid heart beat. 84 to 90 instead of 72 to 76. so there are others that find the heart rate lower than average. ihat'is 60 to 66. Slow heart rate is called bradycardia.

In examining Johnny Dundee. the famous boxer. I found his heart rate only 56. about the slow- est" I'd ever found in a healthy in- dlvidual.

Some years ago I referred to the investigation by Dr. Philip W Morgan. Flnporla, reported in the Journal of the Kansas Medical Society. Dr. Morgan communic- ated with 25 life insurance com- panies to determine the number of policy holders with slow hearts and their life expectancies. He found that men and women with slow hearts were readily accepted "by insurance companies while those with rapid hearts were held for further investigation before being accepted.

In 700 young men with medical histories remarkablv free from serious illnesses. heart rates (with individual resting) of less than 60 were found in 3 per cent and rate:: of 60 to 65 were found in 16 per cent. making a total of 19 ner cent with pulse rates of 65 or less.

Dr. Morgan's observations show that a fair percentage of appar- ently normal healthy liidlvlduak have it slow heart rate and that they can expect. according to medical statistics. about an ill to

The name pyx is given to a chest at the British mint, in which speci- mens oi the coinage are deposited. As often as the boards of the treasury desire. these gold and silver coins are tested by a jury of goldsmlths. who report as to whether or not the coins come up to the legal standard. The periodi- cal testing is known as the trial of the pyx.

ANSWER: The mother evidently thinks she is revenging herself on you by keeping you'froin carrying out your plan about the girl. and she is so blinded by her fury that she does not see that she is wrecking her daughter's life. It is as terrible an example of stupidity as I have ever known.

It is pitiful to think that this girl. who has already been dealt one cruel blow by Fate should be given an even heavier one by her own mother. For the only thing that could take the curse off of her affliction is for her to be given some interesting occupation with which to fill her life. some chance to do something worthwhile in the world and tile ability to make herself financially independent.

The only practical advice that I can give you. poor. perturbed father, trying your best to do your duty under hard circumstances, is to get your married daughter to go and talk to her sister. Perhaps she can brace her up enough to defy her mother and lake the course: that will mean her salvation.
