COMING EVENTS

APRIZ 3 MEETING. Dr. Lawson Drake of the Biology Dept. at U.P.E.I. will speak on the private lives of wasps and hornets. Recalling Dr. Drake's wit and humor from his last visit to the society, we look forward to hearing more about his favorite group of animals.

MAY 1 MEETING. The last meeting of the season will feature the showing of entries to the annual nature slide contest, and the presentation of prizes to winners. Traditionally, this is one of the best meetings of the year, so make a special effort to come and bring a friend.

CAPE TRYON. Sat., Apr. 28 is the date of the annual spring field trip _*_ to Cape Tryon to see the returning cormorants set up housekeeping on -‘— the cliffs. Meet at the YMCA in Charlottetown at 9:00 a.m. Bring a lunch, binoculars, warm clothes and boots.

AMPHIBIAN HUNT. Plan to take in the annual spring migration of the province's frogs, toads and salamanders as they slither and hop their way from hibernation quarters to the breeding ponds. The event usually happens on a mild damp evening in late April. Sign up with Geoff Hogan to be called when "the night” arrives. Be prepared with rubber boots, rain gear, warm clothes and flashlights.

ARBOR DAY AND ENVIRONMENT WEEK. May 18th marks the 100th anniversary of the celebration of Arbor Day on P.E.I. Mark this special occasion by planning now to plant trees and shrubs about your own property. hatch the media for special events throughout the week.

BIRDATHON. This year’s Francis Bain Birdathon is scheduled for Sat., May 26, so reserve the day now for searching out your favorite haunts. Beginning birders

VALLEYFIELD WOODLOT. sat., June 2 is the date for an expedition to look for early returning woodland birds and to enjoy the trees and flowers of spring. Meet at 9:00 a.m. at the YMCA in Charlottetown or at the woodlot at 10:00 a.m. Bring a lunch.

PHOTO WORKSHOP. Award winning photographer Andre Bard from CFB summerside will be giving a photo workshop for NHS members on Saturday, April 14 at 9:00 a.m. at Beaconsfield. Andre will be there to explain the do's and don't's of photography to help people better themselves in this hobby. Beginners and experienced camera buffs are welcome. Bring your camera along and pick up

THE WILD SIDE OF THE ISLE. The travelling nature photography exhibit organized by the Island Nature Trust and the Natural History Society will be heading east in March, under the auspices of the Confederation Center Art Gallery and Museum. On Mon. and Tue., March 19 and 20, it will be on display at Wightman’s Save- Easy in Mbntague. 0n Thur. and Fri., March 22 and 23 the exhibit will be at MacPhee's IGA in Sburis.

PARKS AND PEOPLE EVENT. Winnie Cairns will speak and show slides on her travels and research in western Hudson Strait during the past two summers. The fbcus will be on the seabird colonies and the Inuit inhabitants of the region. The presentation will take place on Thur. March 29 at Ardgowan, Parks Canada's Headquarters on Mount Edward Road. The public is invited to attend.
