HAMBURG, Germany, Aug. 17- Adoif Hitler pleaded earnestly with all Germany tonqht to approve his successi -n to the powers of Reichs- presiditnt Von Hindeniburg—-a suc- cession he asserted was made nec- essary by foreign hostility toward Germany and economic distress at home.

He made no effort to cover up the present economic difficulties of the Reich, but on the other hand referred to them as conditions call-

ing for s. strong central govern- merit. The Chancellor declared he

would have preferred to appeal to the people first and then carry out their decision. but he feared the leaderless weeks which would have intervened might have proved cost- ly to Germany.

Referring to "catchwords" used by the foreign piess, such as "im- pending collapse of the Nazi move- ment" while Von Hindenburg was dying, Hitler declared, "these cir- cles probably cherish a belief the Reich would offer possibilities for throwing into confusion public opinion here and obuoad by endless intrigues, thereby adding t0 the already existing international un- certainty."

LONDON, Ont., Aug. l7.—Thrcat of reprisals against the family of John Labatt prevent the London brewer from naming public details Of his experiences in the hands of his kidnappers. according to a, pjgc- ing together of information available here tonight.

No definite statement was forth- coming from any member of the law firm of Ivcy, Elliott and Glllanders who represent the Labatt family. But in answer to a question as ti) why no details of John Labatts ek- pericnces during his 60 hours of cap- tivlty had been made public, in view of his liberation. Richard G. Ivey said:

“If you were confronted with a matter that involved life and death to yourself and your family, what would you do?"

The answer was "probably keep quiet." and Mr. Ivey replied: "Exactly."

The theory had been advanced. Mr. Ivey was told, that as a result of publicity the kidnappers had become panic-stricken and released their captive. Would it not be fair then. to disclose all the facts?

“We are very grateful for what the Canadian Press has done." he uns- wered, “but we already have incur- red the displeasure of police auth- orities, and we do not intend to do so again. There are other things to consider besides the press. Do not forget Mr. Labatt has a wife and three children."

Mr. Ivcy admitted he was in To- ronto at the time John Labatt, was rclctiscd early today.

Thc convention yesterday voted a strike in the cotton textile industry which employs 500.000 workers.

Mr. Wm. C. MacPher- son Died As Result 0f a Fall From Farm Machine.

Mr. William C. MacPherson, age 35. was the victim of a. fatal accid- ent early last- evening when he was thrown from a. manure-spreader in a field on his father's farm. Ap- parently the three horses in the machine had run away, with the result that the driver fell to the ground. A f the skull and a resulting cerebral hemmorhage were the immediate causes of death.

The body was discovered about '7 p.m. by Mr. James MacDonald, Hopcclale, who noticed the horses entangled in the fence. and inves- tigatcd.

It is thought that the body was found within an hour after the ac- cident took place.

The coronrr, Dr. Murchison. Clyde River. and the R. C. M. P. were immediately summoned. Dr. Murchison on interviewing the wit- ficsses and examining the body do. cided that an inquest was unne. cessary.

The deceased. who was unmar- rled, was the son of Mr. Dcugald MacPherson. Hartsville.

LONDON. Aug. 17—An official European wheat expert who has been in closest touch with the in- ternational wheat conference in semion here predicted tonight that the parley will end in a stalemate.

As a result of several days of quiet investigation. Chief of Police Birt- wistlc and Constable J. W. Higgins have located the gold watch, stolen Sunday night from the Morell Hotel, and have placed under arrest John Leard MacKinnon, who is charged with thethcft.

Constable Higgins found the watch on Thursday night in a barn on Eus- ton Street. Subzicquciit investiga- tion resulted in the arrest last cvcn- ing of MaicKlnnon.

The watch had been taken from a. safe, the combination of ivhich was apparently known by tlic person who stole the time-piece.

A most satisfactory meeting of the provincial Cartier celebration com- mittee ivas held on Thursday, and progress to date was reported. Authorization has been received from the Department of National Defence for the paying of compli- ments by the following unite. in con- nection with the arrival of the French delegates on Aug. 24:

A Guard of Honour from the Charlottetown detachment of the Royal Canadian Volunteer Reserve. A similar guard drawn from the Prince Edward Island Highlanders, the guard to be accompanied by the Pipe Band of the Regiment.

A travelling Cavalry Escort sup- plied by the ‘Prince Edward Island Light Horse.

An appropriate salute of guns has also been authorized together with the presence of two sea-planes the Royal Canadian Air Force.

As the liner Champlain comes to anchor in Hillsboro Bay about noon on the 24th, a sea-plane of the Royal Canadian Air Force will drop flow- ers in her path. As previously sta- ted, school children and citlzem generally, era asked to contribute flowers for this pumoee, which will be received on the morning of the 24th at the Marine Wharf.

The sea-planes will also be in the air when the passengers are being transferred from the liner to Char- lottetown.

The landing of the passengers will take place at about 1.30 p. m.

The official party will be received and the Guards of Honour will prea- ent arms, after which they will be inspected by the official representa- tives of the French nation.

The party. proceeding by motors to the Provincial Building. will be escorted by the travelling cavalry escort.

The committee expresses the hope that as many of the children of Charlottetown and the surrounding districts will assemble at the arch which will be erected on Great George Street near the intersection of King Street.

Upon arrival at the Provincial Building the party will proceed at once to the Confederation Chamber, after which they will take seats on the balcony immediately over the main entrance.

A large number of seats are being provided at the right and left of the main entrance. The committee re- grets, however, that it will mt be possible to provide seating accom- modation for all present. Invitations have been issued to a number of persons holding official positions elsewhere in Canada, and to officials and representatives of organizations and national societies in this Pro- vincc.
