The Liberal Cenvention.

We learn that the steamer Southport was taken off the Rocky Point ferry, to day, and has been engaged in carrying lumber to some of the Premier's con- stituents on the Hillaborough River. That is to say, the Liberal Party is pre- pared todo that which the present Cana. dian Government has already done. In point of fact, the Liberal Party, in Conven- tion, has adopted, holus bolus, the policy of the Government in respect to Reci-

procity! This is, certainly, a compliment to the Government. ‘‘ Imitation is the sincerest fixttery.. But can the Liberal
Party be trusted to carry out that policy? Can the unprincipled rake be confidently relied upon when he dons the clothes of an honest man and leaves it to be inferred that he has abandoned his former ways? We have no guarantee whatever that, once office, the Liberal Party will not return to policy of Unrestricted Reciprocity, involving an unjust ciscrimin- ation against Great Britain, leading on to direct taxation, leading on to the practical loss of our power to control our tariff, lead-

In respect to the Manitoba difficulty, there is an omission from the list of resolu- tions which must strike everyone as pecu- The liberal party have denounced the course of the Government in respect to the Manitoba School Act. Their ‘eader has declared that that Act should have been disallowed. Mr, Tarte and other leading lights of the liberal party have been stumping the coun- try on behalf of separate schools in Mani- toba. Mr. Joly, one of the most respected and respectable members of the liberal psrty, declared, before the convention, that “the minority in Manitoba had not asked more than their rights, which had been trampled upon.” Lie felt that the ** liberal party would recognize that they were en- titled to their righis.” Yet the leader of the liberal party and hia followers have not shown the courage of their convictions.
What are now the feelings of Mr. Joly and all these who have been educated by Mr. Laurier, Mr. Tarte, and other prominent men of the liberal party, to believe that a wrong has been committed by the Govern- ment in respect tothe Manitoba Act! Are these the men to right the wrong! We Such ** wobblers" are not to be trusted to right anything.
The Liberal Party will never be a power in the land while its leaders are moral cowards—afraid to say what they will do and what they will not do in respect to burning questions of the day.
As affording some prominent members of the Liberal Party an opportunity te enjoy a pleasant holiday, and to fraternize together and partake of the cup of kindness held out at Ottawa, the Convention was an undoubted success. But the differences of opinion which it has shown to exist in the Party in respect to vital questions, and the fearfulness of the leaders to take a decided stand in respect to difliculties which beset the path of Canada, will completely neutral- ize the advantages which Were anticipated by the Liberal Party and its friends.

King’s College. :
Convocation Hall was crowded on Thurs- day, the occasion of the Enccenia proceed- ings at King’s College, Windsor. There was a large attendance of visisors. Degrees were conferred, and this was followed by the valedictory. This was read by Mr. De M lle, owing to the fact that the valecdic- torian of the year, H. A. Jones, B. Sce., was suffering from a severe cold. After the valedictory, Canon Partridge delivered an oration.
King’s College has closed a year which gives great encouragement for the future. and looks like a revival of its glorious psst. The alumni association is showing that it has more than a mere name to live, ané it is a power for good to the college. It is to it in great measure that the financial outlook of the college has teen enabled to do much of its valuable work last year.

De. Melatyre, M. P., and Hon. Thomas Kickham arrived home from Ottawa last evening. They were in attendance at the Liberal Connention. Most of the other dele- gates are expected this evening.
Ex-Senator Leland Stanford died at Palo Alto, Cal., on luesday evening, of apolectic trouble from which be had been a eufferer for several weeks. He was known as the greatest horse breeder of the Pacifie slope and as the owner of such famovs horses as Stamboul, Palo Alto and others.
It is reported from Englamd that the Princess of Wales is strongly opposed to the mariitge of the Duke of York and the Princess May of Teck. After an interview with the Queen on the subject, Her Royal Highness, itis stated, gave her consent to the engagement, but added that she would not attend a wedding which was so repugmant toher. The Qreen has decided that the bridesmuids sha!] be ten of her grandchildren, drawn from the families of the Prince of Wales, the Duke of Edinburgh, the Duke cf Connaught, Prince Henry of Battenburg and the Duvhess of Albany.

Aud Dies With His Brave Crew. Some Bodies Recovered.

Another terrible calamity has befallen the British navy. This time the battleship Victoria, flag-
gone to Sthe bottom, aud hundreds of lives are lost.
The Victorias, which flew the flag of Vice Admiral Sir Géorge Tryon, K. C. B., was run into off Tripoli, Syria, by the British battleship Camperdown, wnder the com- mand of Captain Charles Johnston. The Camperdown rammed an enormous hule in the Victoria’s side, through which the water poured in torrents. She began to settle, and before those on board of her could cast loose their small boats the ship went to the bottom, carrying down with her nearly four hundred men, Some of the cfticers managed to get out of the suction caused by the sinking vessel and were rescued. Amongjthe lost is Vice Admiral Tryon. As soon as the officers cf the Victoria saw that there was danger of the ship foundering, orde:s were given to close the collision bulkheads, and while the men were still trying to shut them the vessel with her immense guns and top hamper turned over and carried them down.
The first report of the ‘disaster stated that about 200 men had been drowned, but later despatches showed that the loss of life waa far greater, not less than 348 of the officers and crew having gone down with the ship.
The first despatches cencerning the accident led to the belief that the disaster had occurred off the coast of Tripoli in Northern Africa. Later advices showed that the scene of the calamity was near Tripoli, a port town on the Eastern Mediterranean, fifty miles northezst of Beyrout, Syria, and comparatively a short distance from the Island of Cyprus. Admiral Tryon was on deck at the time of the collision, but refused to leave his ship and went with her to the bottom.
The monetary loss is estimated at £2,- 150,000,
The Duke of Edinburgh has received this despatch from Emperor William :— ** Words ¢annot express our horror, We all sympathize with our British comrades. Aaa token of our sympathy, your ensign is flying from mainmasts of our vessels, with our ensign at half-mast, according to my orders.”
The Duke of Edinburgh replied: ‘‘ The British navy and nation feel deeply the sympathy expressed by your majesty and brother officers of the German navy for us in this great disaster.”
Another despatch from Beyrout says :
‘*The collision occurred at five o'clock, yesterday afternoon. The vessels were at almost right angles when the Victoria was struck. Those on the Victoria's deck at the moment of the cellision scrambled away and were rescued by boais from the Camperdown and several other vessels. The men below had no time to reach the deck. The sudden heeling of the Victeria caused her to begin to fill immediately, No es- cape was possible. She went down in 80 fathoms of water.”
So far, all efforts are devoted to recover- ing the bodies. Shortly after the collision, five bodies were taken from the water, one the body of the chief paymaster. They were buried last evening with military honors at Tripole.
The Camperdown wastseverely damaged forward in the colliston.
It is said now that several times the Victoria has shown signs of weakness in her steering gear. One theory of the ac- cident is that on account of this weakness she became unmanageable and cou!d not be got out of the Camperdown’s way.

Torowro, June 22.— As the Grand Trunk specia! from Hamilton was approaching umber Bridge, near the city, this morn- ing, an unknown man about 50 years of age, was seen to place a revolver at his head and fire two shots. He then threw himself across the track, when the whole train passed over his neck, completely sever- ing his head from his body.
Panis, June 22,—In the Chamber of Deputies to-day M. Millvoye accused M. Clemenceau of delivering to Englend priv- ate letters that passed between M. Ribot, lately prime minister and minister of for- eign affairsand the French minister to Egypt and between M. Ribot and the French ambassador at Constantinople. He produced a list of names of persons and papers whom he alleged England bribed and the amount of money given as bribes He read, amid an uproar that almost drowned his voice: Temps, 50,000 francs; Edourd Le Matin, 39,000 francs; Le Jour, 15,000 francs; Rochefort, 80,000 francs; Clemenceau, 50,900 francs. The order of the day moved to the effect that the Cham- ber condemned the document as spurious. It regretted that the time had been fool- ishly wasted listening to the presentation. This was adopted by 489 to 4.
