SUPREME COURT. The Hilary Term of the above Court commenced at Charlottetown on Tuesday last, There were fifteen eriminal cases on the Calendar, most of them, petty tareeny, one, forgery; and one, arson. Nearly all have been disposed of. The arson case excited con-

siderable interest; we will therefore give an outline of the principal facts it elicited.

Tne Queen versus Isaac Henperson—Inpict- MENT FOR Arson.— Friday, January 5.---The Attorney and Solicitor General appeared for the Crown : the Hon. C. Young, Q. C., and C. Palmer, Esq. for the defen- dant. The Solicitor General opened the case, and ealled the first Witness, John Nicholson, who de- posed—that in September last he resided on the Brackly Point Road—that at about two o’clock in the morning of the 16th of that month,he was awakened from his sleep by the door of his house being forced open,and that before he had time to leave his bed, two persons, disguised in fe- male attire, with gauze upon their faces, commenced a violent attack upon him with sticks—that he (witness) took hold of one of them, and tore the covering from one side of his face, whereupon he discovered him to be the prisoner, Isaac Henderson-—that he (witness) having ef- fected his escape from his assailants, ran, without having any clothing upon him, to the house of Mr. John Henderson, whom he roused, and told that he (witness) was well nigh murdered—that John Henderson accom- panied him (witness) back, but before they reached the house they discovered itto be in flames;—that about two hours after they met the prisoner and James Roper on the public road going towards their homes; that John Henderson charged them with burning the house, that the prisoner resented the charge by collaring his brother, whereupona scuffle snsued.—This witness was cross- examined at considerable length by Mr. C. Palmer, but nothing material was elicited, excepting some contradic- tion of his previous statement respecting his identifica- tien of the prisoner. ‘(wo or three other witnesses were

examined for the Crown; but no direct or important evi-| *

dence was given. The Hon. C. Youno addressed the Jury for the Prisoner, and in the course ofa lengthy and and very eloquent Speech, exposed the flimsy nature of the evidence for the prosecution, and promised to pro- duce witnesses who would prove that it was impossible for his client to be guilty of the crime with which he was charged, he having spent the night of the fire from 10 till 3 in the morning, in their company. Witnesses were accordingly brought forward at the close of the learned Counsel’s address, who triumphantly establish- ed the promised alibi; when the Court told the Jury, that if they believed the witnesses for the defence, and no reason appeared why they should not, it was unne- eessary to examine more. The Jury consulted fora few moments, and then pronounced a verdict of Nor Guit- vr.

Milford, Dec. 8.—The Schr. Dispatch, Aughterson, from P. E. Islahd, to Bideford, drove on the rocks near Lenny Head yesterday, and became a total wreck ; crew (except one man) drowned ; a small portion of materials saved, and about 500 deals in a damaged state. 11.— About 1,600 deals in a damaged state have been saved from the wreck of the Despatch, besides several others broken.

The Schr. Barbara Ann, Lutes, from Halifax, which place she. left on the 19th ult., appeared off this Har- bour or Wednesday week last, and getting entangled with the ice was obliged to take shelter between Governor’s Island and Point Prim ; they threw over their anchor, and endeavoured to hold on, but the ice pressing so heavily upon it, it gave way and was lost. The next morning the wind came round to the North West, and broke up the fields of ice, and they were then enabled to get out, and run away for Georgetown, where she arrived on Friday night, and now lies safely moored at Georgetown Wharf.—Cargo a'l'in good condition.

The Schr. “ Annandale,” and a Brigantine, both from Halifax, belonging to Joseph Wightinan, Esq, arrived at Georgetown on Friday last.

The Schr. “ Euphemia,” Murchison, from St. John’s Newfoundland, also arrived at Georgetown on Friday last.
