Panuamentary Companiton.—We have received from the editor, Mr. C. H. Mack- intosh, ‘‘ The Canadian Parliamentary Companion and Aunual Register, 1878.” It is a valuable compilation of just such infor- mation as is required, in connection with the Dominion and Local public affairs of the
country.
Hatwax seems to be startled oe the appearance of a financial panic similar to that at present existing in Montreal. The Herald ins an article on the subject thus: ‘“‘Our city is disturbed to its lowest financial depths, and unless some prudence is observed the result may be disastrous, not only to a large number of individuals, but to the city generally. The heavy sus-

A vispatcu from Fredericton, N. B., of the 19th says: ‘‘Some time yesterday morning three barns belonging to Asa Bur- pee, of Burton, Sunbury County, were de- stroyed by fire, along with a large quantity of hay. Mrs. Burpee, however, rescued all

In the House of Commons, this afternoon, Sir Stafford Northcote stated that there were now thirteen vessels of the British fleet near Constantinople. Ilronclads have passed through the Straits under protest from the Turkish Government, but the English Government saw no reason against keeping their ships in their present posi- tion.
Pesth papers report that Count Andrassy on Wednesday definitely refused an alliance with England, and that Sir A. G. Elliot thereupon declared that England would not | enter the Congress.

In the House of Lords tp-mght, Lord Derby. in replying to a long speech of Lord Strathehen on Eastern affairs said that, for obvious reasons, the fleet should not go into the Black Sea at present. He protested against the repetition of the un- founded statements relative to the dissen- sions in the Cabinet. The Government had not asked that Greece should enter the Congress on the same footing as the Great Powers; but simply be represented as means of making her voice and claims heard.

GENERAL Stk Wituiam O’Grapy Heary died at Halifax on Tuesday night. He was Commander of Her Majesty’s forces in the Dominion for five years, being the successor of Sir Hasting Deyle. He entered the British service in the year 1828 as Ensigu, and became Lieut.-General in 1873. He saw much service. Besides ten active years in India, he served in the Crimea during 1854-55, At the battle of the Alma he had his charger killed under him. At Inker- man he received four bayonet wounds while surrounded by a party of Russians, against whom he gallantly defended himself with his sword until they were driven back. He also actively participated in the capture of Balaklava ; was all through the siege, and at the fall of Sebastopol, and was present at the gallant repulse of the Russian sortie on the 26th of October. He wore the Crimean medal and four clasps, was an officer of the Legion of Honor, was decorated with the 3rd class of the Medjidie, and Turkish medal.
Tue following is further particulars of the the disturbance in Toronto on the 18th: “Shortly after midnight a mob advanced up Queen Street and attacked Cosgrove’s tavern. The crowd inside answered with revolvers and the rioters returned fire. Hundreds of shots were exchanged and stones poured into the hotel until window sashes and furniture were completely des- troyed. The police, 90 strong, charged the mob and wielded batens with great vigor. Four men shot—one, a young Protestant, named Clegg, it is feared fatally. Mean- time another mob, 1000 strong, opened fire with stones on Collins’ tavern, further up Queen Street, where Rossa was believed to be. Revolvers were used here, but the police, fighting with matchless pluck against enormous odds, cleared the street. Rossa was driven out of town at 11 o’clock. Police- man Worth was struck on the temple with a cobble stone and knocked senseless. All his comrades were more or less injured, Probably 150 rioters injured with stones and batons. Doctors’ rooms are crowded, but asarule the wounded went home, or were taken away to avoid arrest, At two o’clock this morning a hundred roughs are congregated in gangs in lanes and back streets, and polige parding the streets in force.”
A REMARKABLE case of suspended anima- tion is reported from Andover, Victoria County, N. B. A young man named Wells, one of the wardens of a lunatic asylum near Boston, who has been at Andover on a visit for about three weeks, went over to Fort Fairfield on Tuesday, March 5th, to a ball. Whilo there he complained of being unwell and returned to Whitney’s Hotel; next morning he walked about two miles to the residence of his aunt, Mrs. Currier, where he took his bed, and, as was supposed, died. Since that time the body has been kept in a warm room, but no signs of decomposition have ensued. His hands and feet are as loose and free of movement as when alive; his cheeks are ved, 4nd the eyes seem bright
