| A Terrible i Explosion.

Five acres of fire was the awful sight witnessed at the Standard ()'1 Refinery at Fifth and C. Streets, Louisville, Ky., on Monday mormng last. [t was first reported that seven persons had lost their lives, and later thot three were killed and thirty-five wourucd, but it is now believed that only seven were injured, two fatally, The fire broke out at 8 45 o'clock. The Re- finery is on the east side of the Lonisville and Nashville railway, but the tanks are scattered along it on both sides. On Satnr- day a tank of crude oil came in on a flat car from Cleveland, and it was to be turned into the refinery vats. Some of the work- men thought the iron was too hot. After consultation it was postponed in the hope tnat the tank would be cooler. It did not prove to be, however, and it became ne- cessery to run the oil out of the tank into another in the yard. At first they decided not to open it. Finally they open- edit. In an instant there was a dull paff as the vapor escaping, filled the air all around. The gas, as is known, is heavier than the air, and it sank to the groucd, spreading out all over the locality and mov- with the wind. Almost in a twinkling it reached one of the sheda, under which there wasa tire. There was a flash as the inflammable vapor ignited and immediately alter there was a tremendous explosion. The tank was blown into pieces and hun- dreds of gallons of burning oil was spatter- ed all over the great works. In less time than it takes to relate the storchouses, filled with thousands of gallons of canned oil, the cooper shop, carpenter shop, pump and engine houses, the filling and iubricating house, the storage house} the paint and glue houses aed 900 feet of platform were all ablaze and burning furiously.
