They are still remarkably active despite their advanced age, and Mrs. Mac- Donald is able to read her Gaelic Bible without the aid of glasses. They arc- livlng on the old Mac- Donald homestead at Valleyfield. where their son. John, continues to carry on as did his father and grandfather before him.

Roads Need Rest For Longer Life

ITI-IACA, N. Y., Aug. 26-That concrete highways can rest and re- gain their strength when traffic is light is demonstrated in test at Cornell University.

In these tests, square bars of concrete the thickness of pavement and several feet long are subjected to poundings like those from heavy traffic until they break. ‘This re- vesls the practical strength of various mixtures andthlckness.

Highway concrete is slightly el- astic. It bonds and stretches a blt under the weight of each passing vehicle. These traffic flexlons in the concrete are reproduced ln the Cornell Laboratory.

If each stress is not more than half of the force necessary to break the bar, the concrete will stand six lio seven million stresses before it breaks.

But if the individual stresses reach two-thirds or three-quarters of the concrete‘: breaking strength. the material will stand only 200,- 000 to 300,000 of them. '

The ability of the concrete to "rest" is shown by interrupting the stress. Bome initial stress, if con- tinued long enough, will cause a drop of about 40 pet- cent fn the concretes tensile strength. That is. a weight 40 per cent less than re- quired at first would break the concrete

But. if the stress is stopped for: a while and the concrete given a; complete rest from presure, It re-

covers the original tensile strength.

No such recovery occurs, how- ever, tf the concrete has been over- strained. That. ls, overloading it 000 much beyond the 40 per cent limit leaves the concrete permanently weakened. In this respect pavement is like the human constitution.

In practice this means that highways on which traffic virtual- ly stops at. night. many not need to be quit/e as good in tensile strength as similar roads with 24- hour traffic.
