Also that the Jewish Chronicle urges the discontinuance of the emigration of refugee Jews to Canada in consequence of a cablegram stating that those already arrived in Manitoba are suffering severely

A blind man of 50 has married a girl of 14 in Philadelphia, her parents consentiny, and a Unitarian clergyman performing the ceremony. The motive on the part of the bride seems to have been a desire to roam about the country, for her husband is a beggar, and will iske her cn his journeys as a guide. Another girl of the same age has married a travelling magician, at Springfield, Mass., impelled by a similar wish to see the world ; but indier case the parents object, and are seeking to get her back.

The Prince of Wales has set his heart on reviving the gayety of London, and goes to work as if he ment it. Every night ho may be seen at one or more theatres, every morn- ing flashing along the causeway in his low pheeton, every afternoon riding or driviog in the Park. He evidently feels the great want of life and animation, and the dulness which has been existi-gin the very heart of trade and retideriog the middle class population so completely dependent on each other that the upper class has been regarded as of no use in the general mavement. The Prince aims at nothing less than to restore the balance, and render the uoper ten as dependent on trade as trade has hitherto been dependent on them.

Mrs. Miller procured a divorce at Boone, Iowa, and an hour later married again, while her ex-husband was simultaneously united to her sister. it was an amicable rearrangement of relations—like that of Mr. and Mrs. Dent, who discussed their incompatibility while riding to Fort Wayne Ind., and agreed to separate. the woman taking half the farm, half the money in bank, and half the children. They went into court at dnce, and the decree of divorce was issued the same day. of. attempt of Mr. Payne, of Oakville, Neb., to transfer his wife among other things on his farm to Mr. Peters, the purchaser, was not so successful. Mrs. Payne was willing to be divorced, but declined to become Mra. Peters, and this break in the bargain has led to a Jawauit.

What was supposed to be the ruins of an old fort near Bombay has recently been discovered to be a Buddhist burial ground. On being opened there was found in the centre a small brick chamber nearly three feet equare. Three feet from the top of the chamber was found a dark circular stone box about a foct and a half high and two feet across, the top and bottom slightly convex. On lifting the lid there was, thick with earth and verdigris, a cental some- what egg-shape copper-casket, about six inches high and eighteen round the middle. About two inches from the casket thrre was a circle of sight copper images of seated Gaddahs, each about four inches high and two inches across. Inside of the copper casket was a stone casket, inside of the stone casket was a crystal caskes, and in- side the crystal casket was a little round dome topped gold box, In the gold box, covered with gold flowers, as bright as the day they were laid there, were thirteen swall shreds of earthenware, perhaps pieces of Buddah’s begging bowl. Between the copper ¢asket and the silver casket was a sree about a halfan inch deep. This was filled with abont 800 gold flowers, much dined by damp and verdigris, a handful ot daked able powder, aud thirty-four preci- ous stones. Aroong the other things were found a emali silver coin, a Hindu copy of a Greek or Bactrian model, very fresh and clear, but struck from ao faulty die. The Pacific Railway.

It is gratifying to be able to announce that to-day another important step 1s made towards the completion of our great national highway to the North- West—the Canadian Pacific ralway. This morning the last rail on the line between Prince Arthur’s Landing and Winnipeg will be laid, and on July Ist the read will be open for passenger aud freight traffic. Our next Dominion.day will therefore be an important occasion, as it will mark the inauguration of » means of rapid land and water coumunication through owr c-wn territory with the Prairie Provinee ; for during the greater part of the year, aided by the Sollingwood and Sarnia lines of steamers, we will be inde- pendent of the American railway system. This grand exhibit is the result of the vigorous railway pulicy of the preseni Administration. Under the curious pro- posals of the late Government we |should by about 1884 have had a sort \of half and half system of travelling be- tween Prince Arhur’s Landing ana Win- nipeg. The traveller would, under it, be ablé to proceed a couple of hundred miles west by rail, a few hundred miles , south by water, a few miles west on a nar- |row gauge wooden tramway, a few miles further in a zigzag course by water, and two hundred miles west again by rail, «This was, in brief, Me. Mackenzie’s magnificent water stretch s.stem, Sir Charles Tupper, on assuming Office, quickly laid that aside, end the result is the completion to-day, so far as track-laying is concerned, of a direct line from the l.inding to the city of the West, at which all the Dominion ia look. ing. In three years the Government has succeeded in securing a through route from Halifax to Winnipeg, aud has placed in operation two hundred and fifty miles of read west of Winnipeg, or one thousand miles of the Canadian Pacific railway alto- gether !
