tor very young ehnlnal l David Dale had had a birth- day not very long ago. and one of his presents was the darlinust little black puppy. It was a spaniel pup. with long silky ears. a shiny coat of black navy hair. and twinkllnt littla sharp black eyes above_ a saucy nose. He was so lively and full of fun that Mr. Dale named him Perky.

Perky was growing well for each day he had milk and dog biscuit. also vegetables and dog food from n can. David pointed to the picture on the can and said. "'l'l-iat‘s my puppy. 'l'hat‘s Perky. Perky eats this."

Each night the pup curled up on his warm blanket in the cor- ner of the back porch. Mrs. Dale had stuffed an old stocking to make a rag doll for him to play with. To be sure, this rag doll had no eyes nor mouth. not even arms or lcizs, but Perky thought it was wlinderful He could chew ll. shake it, growl at it worry it. race \\‘lll‘i it. then cuddle with it when he u as tired. Susan was glad Perky had his own toy for he had been always after her teddy or David's panda.

Winkle. S'Jsan‘s blond kitten. was very pleased to have Perky as a playmate. The two romped together, rolling over and over. Winkle 5 favorite trick was to hide i-ndor a chair and. when Perky ‘.‘l"ll lw. _iiimp out at him and izrab his ear Usually after sup- per the family Just sat and Hatched the antics of the two as they romped and played to- gather.

Susan and David had been play- in: house together. and Susan had been busy getting supper ready. She had set her little table with her‘ doll‘s dishes and was using [W79 of her little red chairs as a clove. On it she had placed an empty coffee tin for a pot. covcr~ ed will a larpzc tin ‘cover.

.lu.=t then Perky came in from the back porch and Winkle jump- ed out of the doll carriage to iilay uith him. They had a fine game of tag around the table, behind the stove, and across the float‘.

Win!-zie ran in under Susan‘: lit- tle red chair. Perky could not wrigglo his little fat self in un- der the rungs so he had to stay there and bark.

"Yep. yep. yep.‘ he barked in lit- lie sharp barks. He ﬂattened him- self right down with his head on his paws. and his little tail stick- ing up in the air. He jumped from ine side to another while Winkle leased him by reaching out with nine white tipped paw and slap- ping his nose. '

Then Winkle stood on his hind legs and reached over the run; to grab Perky’: ear. What a bark- lng there was then! Perky made :i great race around the chair, scolding at V-ie top of his voice.

"Ynu just come out of there so I can catch you." he barke'.

"You try to catch me.‘ tor- mented Winkie. "I'm coming in utter )'nu." yepped Perky.

“Come along and try it." Winkle said in kitten language. .

Perky backed off and made I racr: for the chair. Now the chair

"Perky expects that cover to jump at him again.“ laughed Mrs Dale. “That certainly quieted the pup and kitten. Now ii’ I could only think of something that would work that well with you and David. wouldn't it be wnnderi'ul""
