FAIR PLAY FOR TEACHERS

At this season of the year when people in general are looking over the past with o. view to New Year's Resolutions, it might be weii to place squarely before the public and De- partmental Officials those matters fr. which teachers have a. Just claim to recognition and fair play.

The chief matter in which teach-

ers are being overlooked is the old question of saiary. Our average sal- ary is $483. Very few of our teach ers receive over $600. Figure it out -less than $50 a month, or about $11 1i. week to live on, and this for doing what authorities assert is the noblest work on earth. Surely no fair-minded person will contend that this is fair play. How can we assume that dignity which is an essential part oi our profession? How can we inspire confidence in those under our charge when they compare our meagre salaries with those of others doing a lesser work for society? A principal in a high school informed me that with the utmost economy all he can save is $6.50 a month-this for ten months in the year $65 for his insurance premium and for two months iraca- tion. some vacation!

Another matter which we have repeatedly asked to have reformed 1s in regard to attendance. The teacher seems to be officially the truant officers in the rural district. That. in itself is an unjust imposi- tion. But the worst part is that if the attendance fails below the pre- scribed perc-entage, the delinquent parents, whose responsibility it ls. go soot-free, while the teachers are penalized by having topped off a slice of their already inadequate P8)’.

Then there is the matter of dis- trict: supplements. When a district either through carelessnus or in- ability. fails to pay the supplement. agreed upon. the teacher's pay is held up. Departmental officials sav that the only way they have of getting at. the defaulting districts i: through the teachers. They openly bragged last year because several enterprising experienced teachers were able to induce the districts by
