Magdalen Islands.
During the week several vessels from (ynebec have arrived at the Magdalen Is- lands with telegraph poles. Sub-contract- ors are already at werk, and the pests are being put down on Amherst Island. — It is expected that they will all be in position by the 15th inst., on the arrival of the steamer Newfield from England. The cable end will be landed at the lighthouse, on the southwest of this island, (Amherst), and from thence emerged a distance of 40 miles, to connect with the east peint of P. K. Island, The] steamer Newfield is ex pected daily with the cable, &c. The Bird Rocks will be connected with the istand* at the east point of these islands, near Grosse Isle, by a submarine cable, twenty-one miles, and a telegraph line will be laid to follew from thence round all the Islands, the terminus, and the same will be dotted with the required offices. Myr. F. N. Gis- borne has been on the Islands superintend- ing everything in connection with the lay- ing of the line offices, in order that tele- graphic communication may take place be- fore the close of navigation

Scarcely less astonishing than Dr. Tan- ner’s recent feat of fasting is the condition of a young lady, the daughter of the Mayor of Gambreke, a village near Bremen, who is said to have been fast asleep ever since the second week in January with the ex- ception of a few hours of semi-weaknessent intervals of from six to eight weeks. An interesting account of her extraordinary state is published in the Hanever Courier. it ajpears-that she lies, plunged in a_ pro- found slumber and entirely unconscious of all that goes on around her, night and day, reclining on her left side, warmly covered up and with a light gauze spread over her head. Nenrishment, chiefly in a_ liquid form, is daily administered to her, which she swallows without awaking for a second. She is a- pretty, slender girl, of a pallid complexion, but she dees not lose in weight during her trances of from forty to sixty days, and when awake exhibits a cheerful disposition and an eager desire to perform such small household tasks as her strength enables her to fulGl. Her father is a well- to-do man, who has consulted several emi- nent medical men in the hope of discover- ing some remedy for his daughter's ab- normal condition, which entails serious in- convenience and constant anxiety upon the other members of the family, but all efiorts made to keep the unlucky girl awake have resulted in total failure.

A Sea Serpent.--A monstrous sea ser- pent, measuring frem seventy to one hundred feet in length, with a body as thick as a barrel and a head about the size of a cask, was seen off the Merigomish coast on Tuesday last, by a boat's crew who were out on a mackerel fishing excureion. The men were abont a hundred yards dis- tant from the serpeut, and saw it plainly. As it moved along it made a wave like a steamer. Thirty feet of it tail was ex posed when it deve, so that its character as a serpent must be regarded as established. Mr. Robert Murdock and Capt.- Thomas Latter were a part of the crew, and to them we are indebted for these particulars. Capt. Latter has seen serpents before, and knows the one encountered on Tnesday to be the simen-pure reptile. Mr. Murdoch never encountered sea snakes before, and was, to say the least, embarrassed by the recent meeting.-—Pictow Standard.

A recent London despatch quetes the following from the Paris correspondent of the Keonomist : ~The Panama canal scheme will probably be again offered to the public within the next few weeks, possibly under a syndicate which will guarantee suflicient subscriptions to insure its success. The projectors of the enterprise announce that the definite formation of a company is in - minent, and that Messrs. Couvreaux ana Herbert, the contractors who made the Suez Canal, are preparing the plant to commence the work.
Tae Brivise Prurr Cror a Famorr.— The HNaglish Gardew publishes accounts of the state of the fruit crops collected from all parts of the Kingdom. ‘From these,” it says, ‘‘it will be seen that the English fruit crop this year may, broadly speaking, be considered to be a failure. Apples, with the exception of a few kitchen kinds, are a light crep, so much so that orchards in some districts are almost fruitless, a remark that applies as much te cider fruits as to ether varieties. Pears are a little better, but these are also a poor crop, not only in this country, but also in the Channel Islands, from which we usually get sach fine Chan- montels, ”
News comes from Copenhagen of a most extraordinary net to say miraculous esca from death. Two lads were playing at the top of the Round Tower, one of the curi- osities of the town, originally built for astronomical purposes and fully 115 feet high, ‘The tower is hellow and a trap-door giving way one of the boys fell through the opening. His playmate fled and only spoke about the accident the next day, when, the wall having been broken through, the boy was discovered at the

of blood but otherwise unhurt, having landed, after his fall of more than one hundred feet, on a heap of old rubbish and shavings.
About ten days ago a young man of geed family, starting from a town in the south of France, went up in a balloen which he had spent more than two years in een- structing. Curiously enough, as the sequel will show, he named it the ‘‘ Nautilua.” The wind was violent, and the balleon sail- ed rapidly away in the direction of the Mediterranean. For many days no news of it was heard. His father remained buried in the deepest grief. A telegram has now been received to the effect that some fish- ermeb have founda balloon in a creek of the sea south of Cape Resso, doubtless the Nautilus. But it was empty. Probably the enthusiastic young aeronant had leaped out in the endeavor to save himself and had heen drowned,
A Croup or Fites,—A remarkable phene ienon was witnessed here on Saturday, 21st August, being no less than’a veritable cloud of flies. They passed Lismore at 5 o’cleck in the evening; close te the shore. They went with the wind, which was blowing lightly from the West, ocenpying about twenty minutes passing a given point, They made a loud buzzing noise, which was heard by many who missed seeing ther. They flew so low that some of them appear- ed to fall into the water. Abont two miles below Lismore they slightly changed their course heading more to the North. After their passage numbers of strange fies were observed in some of. the houses near the shure. They were about haif an inch in length, withwings proportionately longer than ae the common house fly, but whether they belonged to the swarm is un- certain. —Pietow Standard.
There was a shocking accident to a tire- eater in the market place of Leighton Buz- zard, England, afortnight ago. A_ travel- ling negro was performing on a stand, lick- ing red hot iron, bending heated pokers vith his naked foot, burning tow in his mouth, and the like. At length he filled his mouth with benzoline, saying that he would burn it as he allowed it to escape, He had no sooner applied a lighted mateh to his lips than the whole mouthful of spirit took tire, and, before it was con- stimed, the an was burned in a frightful mauner, the biazing spirit running all over his face, neck and chest as he dashed from his stand and raced about like a madman among the assembled crowd, tearing his clothing frem him and howling in mest inteuse agony. A pertien of the spirit was swallowed, and the inside of his mouth was terribly burnt. He was taken into a chemist’s shop and oils were administered and applied, but afterwards im agonizing frenzy he escaped in a state almost of nudity from a lodging house, and was cap- tured by the police and taken to the wor?.- house infirmary.
