“That Free-Trade Deal

A grave question now faces the

‘ Canadian government as a result of © —— tts >freetrade*~auto-deal-with--the

United States. It is whether this os- tensibly constructive arrangement wilk do any good for the Canadian consumer or whether it will benefit only a few rich.automobile manu- | facturers. According to Murray E. . Corlett. legal counsel for the Cana- dian Importers Association, these interests will be the sole beneficiar- ies. Unquestionably this will turn out | to be true if automobile prices are not soon reduced in Canada to their level in the United States. ~ In this connection the Winnipeg Free Press notes that some Canadian politicians, who should know better,’ : claim that Canada is fully committed to the deal and cannot force the manufacturers to cut prices. It is. true that power. to fix prices directly is a- matter of provincial jurisdiction; but there is nothing to prevent Parlia- ment reducing the tariff-on imported European ¢ars, and thus reducing their price here. That alone would have an immediate effect on the price , of Canadian cars. - Beat In the case of Britain a change in’ the anti-duihping law would produce

Otherwise the free-trade deal will be. as Mr. Corlett expects, only. a method of imposing a disguised tariff and a state subsidy by the back door to benefit no one but Canadian auto- mobile factories which are owned for the most part in the United States.

This will be 20th Anniversary Night, and there is no doubt that there will be a large and appreciative audience. As indicated in our news columns on -Saturday, the festival contests are open to all residents of Prince Edward Island, and are being © held during the week at Charlotte town, Summerside and Montague.
