Page o all of a sudden it’s OK to S kick when someone is down. We at the Cadre have been quite patient and hardworking to say the least this year.

We switched to a monthly publi- cation in hopes of providing stu- dent with more quality than quanti- ty, a decision we all felt to be wise.

Within the first couple weeks of school I began hearing rumours of an alternative newspaper being printed.

No worries, I thought, a little com- petition never hurt anybody. And an extra publication could be just what the newspaper needs to get in gear.

The reporters, editors and the Student Union kept to their own work, preparing to release the first issue of the 2008-2009 year within the first couple weeks. Something we felt important as it took almost two months to release the first issue last year.

A week or two before our success- ful release, however, The Semantic appeared in UPEI halls and in the hands of the student body. It was interesting. Placed on 8.5 by 11 looseleaf, mostly entertainment in content but with proper news sto- ries, and a comedic edge.

We were unintentionally thrown into a war with each other. It only made sense. The “alternative when there is no alternative,” as the first issue declared, was doing exactly what it had planned. It was getting people talking, even finding itself

really didn’t know your paper was stabbing mine in the back, but I hope you didn’t.

And to the Semantic’s entire staff, slander us all you want, The Cadre’s taking the high road.

To say I wasn’t worried would be an understatement, but I did come around. “Let them do their thing and we’ll do ours,” is what I decid- ed. It worked well for me. Seemingly for the Semantic. Both publications were getting read and praised for their own personal styles of informing the public.

Editor Kate McKenna and I spoke, congratulating each other on our releases, and copy editor Bob MacDonald, a journalism school chum of mine, would meet me in the halls and we would discuss our successes in campus news.

Bring in the Sept. 29 edition of The Semantic. Inside, an editorial but a pseudo-journalist made sever- al false claims about the paper you are now reading in an obvious attempt to shatter the already cracked public perception of the Cadre. Aside from the multiple mathematical errors about the budget (and that annoying accented e), he exaggerated the recent renaming contest, and made a claim

edition of Panther Prints, while the UPEI Panthers have been going strong since my daddy’s day. My J-school chum issued me a quick apology after reading my emailed reply to their falsifi- cation of the paper’s already tarnished reputation, and I was content. Life goes on.

Until recently when word reached my door that the Semantic spends its meetings badmouthing the school’s official newspaper. “Tearing it apart,” so it would seem.

So to the Semantic I have this to say:

Madame editor, tell me how you really feel. I’ll see you around anyway.
