I Greetings! To all in— caning Freshman students, I'd like to welcome you, to U.P.E.I. and wish you good health and good fortune in your years here.

'lhe U.P.E.I. Student Union has been busy over the summer months getting things ready for a bang-up year at the university. . As president of the Union, my main objective in the caning year will be to make the Student Union at least known, if not loved, by all students on campus. Few U.P.E.I. students are aware of exactly what the Student Union is or does, and very few know all it offers. After reading through this edition of the SUN, perhaps everybody will begin to realize just why we all pay our $45 Union fee, and what we get in return.

We'll start with some basics. 'Ihe Student Union building on campus is the Barn and it should not be very difficult to recognize if you remember that name.

The Barn has

several purposes, all of which are available any day during the week- First of all, it houses the Student Union Offices. Here you will find that rare breed of person sanetines referred to as an "Executive Member", though they are more commonly referred to by a variety of more basic names whidi we shall not list here. The Executive members will post office hours as soon as me have them, so if you would like to see any of us, please remember that we have classes as well and cannot spend all our time in the office so we must stid< to our posted schedule.

they want to do) . We have a cafeteria on the third floor (it's been moved fran the 2nd) and our cafeteria service will

be greatly expanded to serve more meals, more variety in meals, and more nutrition in meals.

The second floor of» the Barn has been renovated into one large dance hall with U.P.E.I.‘s favourite type of refreshment stand located close to the centre of the roan. ’Ihis roan willbe used for our weekly Pig 'n Whistles, special events, and other

things like football pubs.

As a matter of fact, the Barn has changed so much we like to call it the "New Barn". And, like McDonalds' , we did it all for you. 'lhe New Barn has the potential to be the centre of activity on campus; it has Something for everybody. So come on down and take a look. You'll quickly realize that things are indeed changing, and your building is now more useful to you than every before. 4 .

Other than the Barn, your Student Union fee provides you with a student radio (CIMN) , a host of clubs and activities, a student newspaper (SUN), a student medical insurance plan, as well as a strong, recognized representative in dealing with the university administration, governnent, other Student Unions, and the local comnunity.

Of course, all these Student Union benefits cannot please everybody. But we want everybody to feel satisfied with their Union, so if you have any carplaints or suggestions, tell them to a Councillor or an Executive Mather. Don't keep them to yourself because you'll only remain

frustrated and‘ everybody will have lost out on a

'Ihis year the Student Campus Police Force will be strongly enforcing the rules of the BARN.In order to do this effectively we need your support. .

As well, listed below are the charges. and fines

Please note the charging procedurer ‘ ,PROPOSED SCHEDULE OF OFFENCES AND

a) Striking a Campus Policeman or otherwise obstruct- ing a Campus Policeperson in the performance of his/her duties: minimum fine of $50 and suspension of Student Union privileges for the remainder of the year.

b)Drunk and disorderiyminiinum fine of $20 and or' further action.

c) Illegal possession of alcohol or other drugs:

fine _of $20 and or further action.

d)Proper_ty Damagezfirst offence-restitution and/or

fine and/or other penalty,second offence—restitution and Inimitqu fine of $75 and suspension of Student Union privileges for 90 school days. _ ' ‘

e)Disorderl Conduct:minimum fine of $25 and/or sus— pensron 0 Student Union privileges.

f)Assault:miniIm1m fine of $50 plus suspension of Student Union priVileges. ' .

g)'Iheft:replacement plus fine of $20 plus suspension of Student Union privileges,and/or fur- ther action.

CHARGING PROCEDURE

When an individual is seen committing an offense during a Student Union event,he will be charged in the following manner: _ V .

i)approached by the witnessing Campus police- person , » 2)taken to the Campus Police office 3) asked for his Student Union I.D;v 4)given an appearance notice for the next sitting of the Inter-disciplinary Committee. - 'V - . Refusing to show your Student I.D. is a charge— able offense and the accused will be charged for it. v r
