authorities suggest that the pace of Canada’s economic recovery this year may be even greater than Finance Minister Fleming anticipated.

The minister, in his April 9 budget speech, forecast an above- average seven-per-cent increase in the gross national product, value of all goods and services produced this year. That would bring 1959 national production. to a record of some 334,500,000,000 from last year’s 332,200,000,000.

Now some finance department officials feel that the way things are rolling along national produc- tion may climb by about eight per cent or more, bringing na- tional production closer to 335,- 000,000,000.

DEPENDS ON EXTENT

The extent of the recovery would have a bearing on the size of the government's deficit and on its need for new loans. On the basis of a seven-per-cent produc- tion rise, Mr. Fleming forecast a 1959-60 budget deficit of 3393,000,- 000 along with a 342,000,000 defi-
