included Dr. Theodore Herzl, of Vienna, leader of the movement, Dr. Max Nordau, and Mr. Clarence I DaSa!a, President of

Societies. The present plan for the ac- quirement of Palestine is to purchase from the Turkish Government that portion of its domain known as the Hold Land. This country shall be governed as Canada is. The Jewish state will have home rule as regards their internal affairs, the Turks to

keep a bold upon tbe land and to retain their supremacy. In order that thia bome government be made stable and secure the world over, the great powers will be asked to come to en understandiug in the matter and jointiv agree that therights of the Jewish nation be observed. whether or not we shall form‘a confedera-« tion, as to whether or not we shall build transcontinental railways; the ship of state has been built and fairly Jaunshed, but does not the steering and manage- ment of this ship need as much wisdom, earnestness and sincerity and strength as her building and launching, do we not need wise heads and strong arms to direct her course either west or east, north or south; else with tyros, desperadoe: or pirates at the helm she will either be a na- tional laughing'stock and fall a prey to the winds and waves and rocks that beset her course or she will be a disgrace to her builders aud fall a prey to the virtuous isdignation of a stronger power; so those who built and launched her will have dove their work in vain, Yes! Canada is now fairly started in her Career 88 a nation, and it behooves every one of her citizene to do his part in mak- ing her a mighty force in the world for truth and justice. Then as to the in- crease of bribery and corruption: I say that there ia nothing which does more to bring this about than the indifference of respectable people. When the weaker brethren see the indiffefence of those whom they look uj. to can we wonder at , their argument that it matters little which | way they vote, that » five or ten dollar |note is more than acceptable to them ; that it would be foolishness to refuse it when offered. ‘ihe questionatle charac, ter of many politicians and political agents I take ‘o be the direct result of the neglect of these who look down upon them, and with whom the word unscrupulous is an sjective constantly to be associated with the word politician. Someone has to take charge, and if men of respectability and honesty do not bestir themselves and see to it that the government of the country is in the hands of men in whose character and principles they have confidence, then itis only natural that Officesseekers, boodlers and their as- sociates will see their chance and take it. There wasatime when it wes considered a great honor, something for which a re- liable business man, @ good doctor, an hooest farmer, might well aspire, to be a member either of the Dominion or li cal Parliaments. There wes atime wheu such @ man might look with confidence to the best men .of the couu try for hearty support. But now there is no greater discouragem -pt fo those of our politicians who have the best interests of their country at heart, whe are not in the deld for their own sel- fish interests, I say there is no greater dis- couragement to them than this lack of interest about which I write.

Again there are others who abstain from taking any interest in politice because they &re afraid of giving offences; there ace clergymen who abstain from expressing ‘heir opinions, even from voting because they do not wish to cffend any member of their congregxtions; there are merchants wo dothe same because they have among their customers men differing politically [ have heard that the managers of come ef our banks adyise their clerks not to vote or teke any active interest. in politics, that the business of the bank may pot suffer thereby. Aclergyman, mer- chant bank clerk or amy other man who neglects his plain duy asa citizen for considerations such as these I take to.be not worthy ,of the name citizen at all.

The elections will soon beon. It is now the time forevery lover of his coun» try,whether he be Liberal or Conservative independent or what not, to take his part, however quietly, in nominating, working for and electing good reliable men to gov- ern this Canada of ours for another five years. Let us not shirk the duty, but le. us msnfully‘and unfiinchingiy shoulder the responsibility Jaid upon us aad act under it as good men and good citizens should act.
