Srr,—TI bave been reading the report of Mr. dobn Newson regarding the breaking open of Mr. Birch’s desk in the Legisla- tive Aseembly, and must own up to an ins ability to understand it without a key,’ Mr. Newson in one breath says that he, found no evidence of pressure, and in the next volunteers the informaiion th.t ten pourds pressure would open the desk. Why the latter information if there was bo pressure? Should not the pressure to force open the lock come from below ? But Mr. Peters says there was nothing in the desk. Perhaps Mr. Neweon or his ascociates who “concur” will rise and explain,

Enthusiastic Celebration on Receipt of the Good News.

News of the occupation of the capital of the Trans.sal by the British reached Charlottetown about ten o’clock thie fore- noon, The news was at once heralded not only by the newepaper bulletin boards but by the firing of guns, the blowing of steam whistles and the ringing of bells

The firet church bell to ring forth, we believe, was that of St. Peters; and it was rung by Mrs. Hine whose son is with the Royal Canadian Regiment at the front.

Bunting was quickly given to the breeze in all parts of the town. The city never looked gayer.

The procession of the school children numbering about 1200, carrying flags, was & fine sight, inspiring hope in the future of our country. Shortly before 11 o’clock the pupils of the three schools aseem bled at City Halland marched to the Provin - cial Building Here they sang ‘* Soldiers of the Queen” and “God Save the Queen.” Three cheers were given for the Queen,

Lord Roberts and the Premier. Premier Farquharson addressed them and complimented teach-

ers and echolars on theiraction. Mr. Blanchard, chairman of the school board announced a holiday for the schools.
