The Halifax Herald of Monday remarks that, ‘rev. J. W. Falconer, pastor of the Firat Presbyterian church, Truro, preached in Coburg road church yesterday morning and in St. Mathews in the evening. On both occasions the rev. gentleman was listened to with deep and interested atten- tion. Rev. Mr. Falconer is one of the foremost Presbyterian preachers in Nova Scotia, a fact that was demonstrated to Halifax people by his thoughtfu!, eloquent aod earnest sermens yesterday.”
Presbyterian polity is to be discussed before the courts at Ottawa. The heirs of the late Rev David J Hyland are suing for arre wages of salary while he was wrong- fully suspended,and fora time after he was reinetated. Charges were made against the deceased minister upou which he was suspended by the Presbytery of Ottawa. He was acquitted and reinstated, but when be went back to his church to preach no one attended, and he had the church to himself. The Marchand government, of Quetec. after the u-usl grit manner, are going into the monev borrowing busiwess, this time for $2,600,000, and again in the usual grit mavner al#o, are trying to put the blame on the loan of their predecessors. They allege that the previons government lett a deficit of over $900,000, and made promise of about $1,000,000 in railway eu bsidies “without legislative warrant.” There is no evidence so far of avy deficit except of grit manufacture, and the Marchand government can be vader so obligation as 10 subsidies promised by their predecessors “without legelative warrant.” From the evidence so tar, it appears that the new loan of $2,000,000 is to pay a deficit mad, and subsidies promised, by Mr. Marchanu and hie friends.
Sir Arthur Farword, bart, con«ervative member of parliament for the southwest divisioa of Lancashire. in a speech at Liverpool on Thursday, in discussing Great Britain’s friction and the attitude of other powrrs, spoke of the fortign policy of the United States as b* ng difficult to forecast. Speakiug broadly ne explained, the United States would be slow to draw the sword in any quarrel excepting with berself; but at the same time, be added, “ her domestic and political divisions are eo keen, her politicans are so uwoscrupul- ous as to the methods they use to injure their opponents, and their prese so sensa- tional and effective, that any day the nited States might unwittingly aod without real intent,be found in conflict with som*-other powers.” At the bottem ef Yankee hearts there is,regard for England, but their minds are so overloaded with old preja- dices that we could not wi h reasenable certainty calculate on which side of an 1s- sue the great republic might stand.
