Tue United States’ Secretary of the Trea- tury,—Mr. Gage—estimates that, withstanding the war taxes, there will be a deficit for the fiscal year ending next June of $112,000,006, and that the total expendi ture of the year will be $689,871,000. It costs something to carry on the affairs of @ great nation in a state of war! Taxes in the United States must go up as 4 consequence of the Empire Expansior resulting from the war. The etanding army of the States is to comprise 100,000 men and the navy is to be greatly enlarged. Still the tax payers won't complain overmuch, eo long as they see thatthe government of the States is winning glory for the Great Republic and doing good in the world.
