Great educational progress is reported by the United States Commissioner on Educa- tion. A remarkable incredse in norma achools and schools for prenaring teacher is noticeable, from 65 in 1871, with 10,922 students, to 220 in 1880, with 43,077 stu- dents. Still more remarkable is the growt! of the kindergarten system, from 42, with 1,252 pupils, in 1873, to 232 in 1880, with 8,871 pupils.

Mr. Main, of the St. Croix Courier, has discovered a Graca Darling in Charlotte, N. B., in Miss Boyd of the Ledge. O. Sunday last two young men, named Purton and Gaios, while sailing near that place, had their boat upset and they clung to th upturned boat. Herr Riniker, chief forester of Canton Eargau, Switzerland, says that where there are forests ue hail storms occur, but wher- ever a clearing is made hail can be formed. while the forests of the Lindenberge Moun. tains remained unmolested hail storms were unknown. But geps were made in the woods, and not only was hail formed, but it was seen to traverse the path of the gaps. The explanation given is that while hail clouds contain positive electricity, negative electricity is conducted from the earth by the irees, and the two currents meeting create enough heat to thaw the stones. But on the removal of the trees this action can- not take place.

In Canadian cities, as wellas in those of Fngland and the United States, clerks are superabundant, and hundreds are always out of employment. The London clerks have held meetings, and expressed dissatis faction with the present state of the pro- fession. No immediate resuié appears to have been accomplished beyond a news- paper discussion on clerical employment. Several of the large employers have declared that the supply of efficient clerks is scarcely beyond the demand, and that nine-tenths of the epplicants are invariably useless for any position, It is, therefore, obvious that clerks should seek to possess higher qualifications if necessity compels them te be clerks; but if other avenues are avail- able, let them seek employment in other directions.
