THE NOVA SLOTIA ELECTION.

Again the general elections in Nova Sootla have gone with a sweep and the Liberal Government has been sustained by an overwhelming majority. In the general election of April 1897 only three Conservatives were returned out of a House of 88, and it was not supposed that another such a sweep could now follow, but itisoften the unexpected that hap- pens. Well-intormed persons on both sides probably expected that the Murray Administration would be substained by by the Province at large. but probably very few anticipated that the Opposition would have so small a representation in the newHouse as they now appear to have.

THE YACHT RACE. Yesterday’s yacht race, the second of the series so for completed, was won by the Columbia by 78 seconds. It was sail- ed overa triangular course as the ﬁrst race, also won by the Columbis,was sailed over a straight course of ﬁfteen miles and return. The Columbia has now won two of the three races necessary to enable her owner to retain the AmerioaCup. It she wins only one more cut of the three pos-W sible races yet to come the Columbia will retain the cup. 0n the other hand the Shamrock can only win the cop by out- salling her competitor in all of three races in succession.

It will readily be seen that the chances of ﬁnal success for Sis Thomas Lipton and his best are exceedingly small. We believe that the sympathies of our readers and their hopes as well, down to yesterday, were largely with Sir Thomas and the Shamrock. The eagerly con- tested ;cup seems now likely to remain yet longer in American hands, but

now held power in that Province continu- ously since August 1883, a period of over nineteen years. During the ﬁrst two years of that time the Government was led by Hon. W. T. Pipes, then for twelve years by Hon. W. S. Fielding and during the past five years by Hon. George H. Murray. Both Mr. Fielding and Mr. Murray have long held alarge place in popular favor throughout the Province and under their administration and especially that of the former, was laid the foundation for the largely increased 2.1 venues which the Province has received from mining royalties. A full treasury. a papular leader, and the general ascen- dancy which the Liberal party has attained throughout the Dominion, were no doubt strong factors in producing the victory in the contest just closed.

On general principles it may be doubt- ful whether it is for the public interest that any party should have ninetenths of the. Legislature at its back. 'lhe best working of our institutions demands that all shades of opinion shall be repres- ented. At present somewhere between one third and one half of the electorate of Nova Scotia will be very inadequately represented in the Assembly. The Opposi- tien will be too small in numbers ard too weak in talent to adequately per- form its functions. On the other land Governments are very human, and with absolute power to do as they please for years to come, and with so many sup- porters “at the table," the Aiminstration maybe inﬂuencedto take a course lees wise and judicious than they would it they were watched by an alert and sumoientiy strong Opposition.
