Some trifling comparisons

Pornography and a fallout shelter.

What do they have in common? ,

Nothing, if one searches for the obvious, which in fact never has to be searched for. It smacks you in the face.

But the similarities in this case are more sublte, invidious, and dangerous.

Obviously, bbth are issues presently on the UPEI campus, and have people militating against them. Last week, a panel discussion was held in Duffy to examine the pornography question, and students are now preparing a petition to present to Senate on Friday condemning the Fallout shelter proposed for under the new Vet College. , '

Both issues are highly seductive. People are easily led into rationalizing them, especially those who stand to gain most from them.

This includes those who make profits by selling and those

who get the cheapest kind of thrills from ogling porno flicks, -

magazines, and books; it implicates also those government and upper class survivors who get to ‘enjoy’ this proposed nuclear security blanket.

Both groups lay aside the morality and ethics of the situation in favour of “practicality and common sense”.

On the next level, both shelter and skin shows violate people’s rights. “Reghaven” violates the right of all citizens to have the equal right to survive in case of a nuclear attack. Pornography eliminates in the eyes of its readers the right women should have to be respected and observed with dignity, and not just as interchangeable faces on a nude feminine form.

The idea that we should ever need a fallout shelter is as degrading and disgusting to the human race as is the most vile pornography. '

And if you want practicality, how’s this?

We pay for both $2 million in tax money for the lives of our leaders who got us into this mess, after all, and the social and administrative costs of the increased violence toward women that has beer linked to pornography. By C_ Ryan

The proposed Vet College will have long and lasting effects on the students at UPEI. The Student Union has grave concerns regarding the future; a committee has been struck to investigate the issue.

Apparently a bunker is to be built at UPEI, under the new Veterinary College to replace the old inade- quate shelter at the Post Office in Charlottetown.

The whole nuclear war mind-set is encroaching on our UniverSity.

‘ CBCT on Tuesday March 13, 1984 on Island Report had an interview with Dr. Reginald Thomp- son, the Dean of Veteri- nary Studies, who was reported as having no objection to the bunker.

Quick enough, I sup- pose, to'pack in govern- ment officials before the big bang.

There are to be cafeteria facilities for the so-called survivors (will there be survivors of a nuclear war? Of course not) and the Dean suggests that as the University is shy of

space we could use the-

bunker for this purpose.

You are being brain- washed to accept a bunker/ fallout shelter that you

will not be allowed, in the event of the holocaust, to use, to accept the idea of a nuclear war where there might be survivors, to accept the obscenity of death and destruction in our midst and to become so used to the idea that is is comfortable to live with.

No longer are officials saying, IF we have a nuclear war. They are saying, WHEN we have one. This is how we will survive whilst you are being destroyed.

As you swig beer in the Barn or cheer on the Panthers, give a moment or two to chekc out with friends how they feel about this issue.

Do we want to assent by our silence, to the whole obscene, inhuman,
