Appalling Figures A cause for serious concern is the marked increase in highway accidents in Prince Edward Island this year, resulting in 19 persons be- ing killed and 290. injered. This would be unbelievable a few years azo, «nd even allowing for the great increase in motor traffic it is still a shocking revelation. — According to the official infor- mation, major causes of these accid-, ents were inattention on the drivers’ part, failure to grant right- _ of-way, excessive speed, alcohol: im-~ « pairment and “plain lack of cour- tesy.”. Pedestrians were also“ blamed for causing a number of mishaps by- walking along highways in dark <> elothiag«.or. darting suddenl} from | “sbehind parked vehicles.

These are recurrent causes of highway accidents everywhere. They are not a new development and there is no excuse for any driver—or ped- estrian—not being fully aware of the dangers involved in eaeh and all of them. They can be traced, mostly, to lack of care on somebody’s part, to “faulty mental attitudes,” as the report states, rather-than to lack of skill or knowledge.

The time is ripe for a widespread eampaign by our citizens—not just
