As the questions of separation swirl about the prov- ince of Quebec, on P.E.I. we have to wonder what will become of us, if Canada does indeed break up. But why should we wait to find out? We can separate just as easily as Quebec. Easier, in fact, because this we live on an island. We aren’t attached to the rest of Canada to start with.

Certainly this is a distinct society. Where else do people transpose the ‘r’ from ‘slippery’ into ‘wash’, leaving ‘slippy’ and ‘warsh’? We must be isolation- ists, since everyone not from here is ‘from away’. Islanders are elitists as well, because there is only one Island. Cape Breton is not The Island, but rather The Other Island. Newfoundland is not The Island either, it’s The Rock.

P.E.I. is special in other ways. We have more roads per capita than any other province. Just think,

of our own here. If they cost too much to keep, why, Catherine can just lop off another 7.5%. If we became our own country, we can put a provi- sion in the constitution to break collective bargain-

ing agreements whenever the government pleases. That might not even be necessary, since contracts are already far from sacred at Province House. Of course, Province House would have to be renamed. Nation House sounds corny, and Country House in the center of Charlottetown is ridiculous. Perhaps Island House? Ironically, our seat of national government would be located beside a monument to the founding of Canada. To be serious, separating P.E.I. from Canada would be a foolish maneuvre, as would a union of the Maritime provinces. All the regions of Canada, distinct as they may be, make up a great country. Remove any one of the pieces, and Canada would forever be an incomplete puzzle. -- Marko Peric Editor-in-training
