Arthe Stipendiary Magistrate’s Court this forenoon, a temporanly insane man named Edward Ryan, appeared for assauit- ing his wife. He was remanded to jail for eight days to recover his lost senses ; Chas. White, crunk and disorderly, was fined $2 and costs, or 8 days imprisonment.

ATTEMPTED Roppery.—About 1 o'clock last night an attempt was made to break into Mr. John Knight’s branch store, on Euston Street. The would-be burglars first tried to force a passage through the door ; but, failing in that, they broke in the fan- light over the door, and were about enter- ing when discovered. They ran away and were pursued, but escaped. They left behind them a coat, a gedit knife and a pipe.

Tue Haverly Jubilee Singers gave an ex- cellent entertainment, to a rather small audience, in the Market Hall Jast evening. Although the audience in the Hall was small, the troop may claim to have per- formed to as large an audience as any foreign company, considering that the Square, on each side of the hall, was full of spectators, who listened, with all atten- tion, to the sweet vocal music discoursed by the minstrels. They will give anoiher en- tertainment this evening, when, we hope, they will meet with great success.

Tur Orange Demonstration passed off very quietly in this city. A number of citi- zens congregated about the Railway Station as the train came in with the Orangemen; but no one, we believe, had the bad taste even to greet them with an insulting ex- pression. The procession was re-formed; and the Orangemen marched back to their hall unmolested. Those whose feelings—it might be supposed—would be irritated by the demonstration, seemed to be perfectly indifferent to it. Remembering the dis- turbance of last year, the Civic authorities did well to take some precautionary mea- sures. We are pleased to report chat the special constables were not required.

THe Mempers oF THE BENEVOLENT InisuH Society will hold their annual Picnic at St. Dunstan’s College on Monday next. The Picnic Committee appointed by the so- ciety have been at work very energetically during the past week and they have spared no pains to make it the most enjoyable pic- nic of the season. They have erected large dancing booths, fitted up the spacious col- lege hall for fancy dancing and secured the services of the best musicians in the city, t'ms all who love to “‘ r p the light fantastic toy’ will not fail to attend. Outdvor sports will also be provided in the way of swings, cricketing, quoiting, ete. As the picnic is in aid of the funds of a strictly charitable society we hepe it will be patronized by all.

‘ Ar the meeting of the City Council held last evening, there were present — the Mayor, the Recorder, Councillors Morris, Byrne, Smith, Heartz, Davy, Stumbles and Peake. A By-law for the management and regulation of Victoria Park, was reada third tlne and passed, and ordered to be sent to the Lieutenant Governor and Coun- cil, for their approval. Councillor Stumbles gave notice that, at the next meeting of the Council, he would bring in a_ By-law, for levying assessment on Real Property in this city, for city purposes, and moved that a special meeting of the Council be held on Thursday, the 18th of July, for the purpose of introducing the same A motion was carried to the effect, that the Street Com- mittee be authorized to improve the Water- ing Cart, at present used by the city. For this there were three entries, viz.: Dr. Jenkin’s mare ‘‘Abdallah Maid” (formerly ‘‘ Ceegt 2 ** Mekowaugh Chief” and ‘‘Mic-mac” Jn this race the ‘* Ab- dallagh Maid” won very easily in straight heats. In each heat she had to be pulled hard in order to prevent her from distancing her competitors. There were four entries for the running race—Mr. Church’s colt “‘Jack of Trumps,” ‘‘ Lightfoot,” ‘ Billy Williams” and ‘‘ Countess.” ‘‘ Lightfoot” won the first heat, and ‘‘ Jack of Trumps ” the second and third. On the second day the free for all was the only race contested. The entries were ‘‘ Frank Allison,” ‘‘ Nellie Thorne,” ‘“Discount” and ‘ Gypsey Queen.’ The first and second heats were won ‘(Frank Allison ;’ the third by ‘‘ Nellie Thorne ;” ‘‘ Frank Allison ” took the fourth, and therefore the first money, ‘‘ Nellie Thorn” the second and ‘‘ Gypsey Queen ” third—‘ Discount” being withdrawn. The best time made was 2.36.

The Orangemen assembled in their Hall this morning to the number of four hun- dred. The Mayor came up with a Police Force of

and entering the Hall, declared that he would not allow them to walk as the pro- cession was illegal. The County Master then subinitted to the ARREST OF SIX ORANGEMEN

to test the legality of the Mayor’s proceed- ings. The men were marched off to jail, where they remain—bail being refusec— until this evening.

The other Orangemen have remained in the Hall up to this hour (3 p.m.) anda crowd of

is congregated outside. The Mayor ad- dressed the mob, and asked them to go home quietly, as the Orangemen had con- sented to give up the procession and go home withont regalia, or badge, as private citizens.

The crowd moved off, bnt the Orangemen still remain in the Hall.

arrived from Quebec to assist in preventing the Orangemen from walking. ‘They were searched at the wharf; and only one weapon was found on them.

THREE THOUSAND TROOPS

have been under arms all day—including 1,200 from outside. They are posted in different parts of the city, but their services have not been required.

There will be no trouble to-day; but to- night fights are expected to be general.

All places of business are closed, and the city wears a holiday appearance.

Telegrams from Orangemen in Kingston and Toronto were received. The former offered to send four thousand men, and the latter ten thousand men, to support their brethren here in the procession.

One hundred and fifty Orangemen ar- rived here from Sherbrooke by the train, and marched to Stanley Street Church, where Mr. Doudiet preached.

One of the special constables deliberately assaulted with his club a bandsman of the Prince of Wales Rites, without any pro- vocation, as the regimert was proceeding to the point of rendezvous. The ruftian escaped.

A man named Brennan from Three Rivers was arrested for having a loaded seven shooter in the procession. He was immediately locked up.

Fifty stand of arms were seized by the police in Union Hall, Craig Street, where and Irish Catholic Club meets.

The Orange procession passed off quietly, but there is great excitement over the news from Montreal.

The Congress.

(Special Despatch to Examiner.) Berwrs, July 12.

At yesterday’s sitting it was resolved that an urgent recommendation, virtually amounting toa command, be made to the Sultan to institute an international financial commission to guard the rights of holders of Turkish bonds and regulate the finances. It was also decided that a commission should immediately proceed to investigate the disorders in the Rhodope districts.

It is thought that Congress will insert in the treaty of peace, and not only in the protocal,aclause concerningGreece. Turkey will thus be obliged to take Greek claims into serious and immediate consideration. The Congress has exempted Servia and Roumania from payment of arrears of their tributes to the Porte. The tribute hence- forth will cease.

A Times’ despatch from Berlin, states that the treaty of Alliance between Great Britain and Turkey, was confidentially com- municated to the Powers shortly before its promulgation.

Various special telegrams from Paris, re- present that the irritation there is abating, and is certain to be very short lived.

It is affirmed that England has given France satisfactory explanations.

Considerable anxiety is excited about Beaconstield’s illness since it has been known that his private physician has gone to him.
