Well street was nervous because the market's long advance made it an easy prey to reaction.

Most of the week there were rumors that the Federal Reserve Board might raise margin require- ments or again boost the discount rate to brake the market's ad- vance.

The rumors in themselves were enough to make Jittery traders sell to take the profits they already

On Friday night. long after Wall street had been deserted. the FRD in Washington boosted mar- gin requirements to 70 per cent from 00.

That means investors now can borrow only 30 cents and must put up 70 cents or their own money for every dollar's worth of stock they buy.

Most stocks are bought for cash. Margin trading now is a minor market factor. That speculative fringe, however, has been growing in importance. Last week loans to brokers and dealers for use in margin trading reached an 11-year peak at 31.820.000.000. That is small, of course, compa ed with the total market value of nearly 3176.000.000.000 of all securities listed on the New York stock ex- change. The import of the board's action was clear. Too much spec- ulation must be curbed.

Margins last were raised early in January to 60 per cent from 50.

The five most active issues last week on the New York xchange were Libby, Mr-Neill and Libby, up Illa at 227:; Pennsylvania Rail- road, unchanged at 20, New York Central. up it at 42Vs; Budd, off is at 217;; and Avco, unchanged at 77A.

CLEVELAND (AP) - Steelmak- ers, who had been predicting a sharp slump in demand around midyear, now forecast more favor- able third-quarter prospects, Steel Magazine said today.

The metalworking weekly re- ported steel buyers for the auto- mobile industry "don't seem to be fazed by the talk of a strike."

"They're ordering forward-do livery tonnage--lune and Jilly especially-jilst as though nothing out of the ordinary were in the wind," Steel said. It added:

”Also, over-all demand on the steel mills is still rising. Volume is developing from construction and related lines of consumption at an encouraging rate."

The. magazine said available tonnage for new third-quarter or- ders will be below that in the sec- ond quarter.

Production last week was just under the all-time high of 2.324.000 uet ions set during the week ended March 29, 1053. United States mills operating at 95.5 per cent of rated capacity. turned out 2,305,000 net tons, with operations advancing in most districts.
