Some exciting scenes took place in the court room during the Guiteau trial to-day T. MacLane Shaw testitied that now owed him money. He had frequent conversations with the prisoner, who once told the witmess he was bound to have no- teriety seme way before he died, if he had to killsome big man and imitate Wilkes Booth. Atthis testimony Guiteau became enraged, and used some abusive language tewarde witness, calling him a liar, a sneak anda puppy. Several other witnesses tes titied for the prisoner's vanity, egotism and desire for netoriety, but saw no evidence of inéanity

Intelligence has been received here that a strong French column is approaching the frontier in pursuit of Tunisian insurgents. The Turkish commander is despatching troops te protect the frontier.

Tomts, Dec. 8.

Incessant heavy rains for the lust three days have impeded the movements of troops en the eoast. The plain around Kairouan is a complete swamp and it is feared that the consequence will be serious for the health of troops.

Vianna, Dec. 9.

The fire broke out in the Prinz Theatre last evening just as the curtain ascended. Upwards of 2,000 persons were in the audi- ence, and when the flames burst out around the stage, on which were 200 performers, a tremendous rush was made from all parts of the house to escape. Many of the panic stricken leaped from the windows, while the shouts and shricks of those unable to escape were heart-rending. During the greatest excitement the gas meter connected with the theatre exploded, causing total darkuess. At midnight 300 dead bodies were recovered and several hundred wore left in the building, which was still in flames. It is now estimated that the loss of life is upward of 500.

Ten thousand florins were subscribed on the Bourse this morning in aid of the fam- ilies of victims of the fire, who probably were far more numerous than at first be- lieved. Business on the Bourse was sue- peuded during the morning.

_ The Lower House, Reichsrath adjourned sitting to-day, at thesuggestion of the Pres- ident, after several sympathetic speeches. Hope was expressed that an ample fund be raised for the relief of suffsrers by the fire. The official report states that of one han- dred and fifty seven bodies taken to the hospitals, ninety-six were those ef men and four were these of women, and twenty were sv badly burned that their sex is indistin- gustiable. It appears there were five water taps above the stage which might have been of material assistanes in checking the fire at the outbreak, but were not used, in consequence of the panic that ensued.

Researches show that the upper gallery must have fallen into the pit, where the enly remains found are small fragments of bone. Beyoud doubt nine handred gallery tickets had bven issued.
